Rita is a minor character on the first season of The Mick. She made his series debut in the eleventh episode of the first season. When Mickey decides to enroll Ben in the all-girl school, she takes him for a meeting with Rita, the principal of that school. When they meet, Rita is excited to have the school's first transgender student at the school. When Mickey accidentally addresses Ben as "Ben", his real name, Rita corrects her, reminding Mickey Ben's name would be "Beth" as long as he was attending the school. Then, Mickey has Ben curtsy and leave the room to play in the playground while Rita and she finish the enrollment meeting.

Scott MacArthur , who had already been hired as a writer for the series, was later offered the Jimmy role and Fox re-shot the pilot prior to the series debut. On September 2, , it was announced that Michaela Watkins joins season 2 in a guest role as Trish. So heading into season two we really wanted to do this character justice and show what was possible with him. It felt really good to see how upset people got when they thought that they were losing him. We think that he's such an integral part of the show and yeah, I don't think the show works as well without him.

This episode officially aired on November 14th, Mickey, Jimmy and the kids attend the th birthday of great-grandmother Rita. Tippy attempts to throw them out until Rita, confusing Mickey and Chip for her friend, Helen, and Helen's brain-damaged son, Dippy, insists they stay. When Tippy goes out of town to unwind, Mickey moves the family into her house and takes advantage of Rita's confusion. Jimmy and Sabrina argue over one of the house staff, Jimmy wanting to befriend him and Sabrina wanting to make him her slave.

Desperate for a taste of the high life once again, Mickey and the Pemberton kids sneak their way into a whole new level of trouble that surprisingly ends in a good way for all of them. But just as she orders them to leave, Rita interrupts them and thinks that Mickey is Helen, her old friend from Florida. That night, Mickey sleeps soundly when she wakes to Rita on top of her, topless. It turns out that Rita and Helen were secret lovers back in the day, and she wants to rekindle the flame now that Helen is back. Mickey runs out of the room and bumps into Chip in the hallway. She tells him about Rita and says that they should leave right away. However, Chip has grown accustomed to being Dippy.
