James Newell Osterberg born April 21,known professionally as Iggy Popis an American singer, musician, songwriter, actor, and radio broadcaster.
Initially playing a raw, primitive style of rock and roll , the band sold few records in their original incarnation and gained a reputation for their confrontational performances, which often involved acts of self-mutilation by Iggy Pop. After releasing two albums — The Stooges and Fun House — the group disbanded briefly, and reformed with an altered lineup with Ron Asheton replacing Dave Alexander on bass and James Williamson taking up guitar to release a third album, Raw Power , before breaking up again in The band reunited in with Ron Asheton moving back to guitar and Mike Watt on bass, and the addition of saxophonist Steve Mackay , who had played briefly with the — lineup. Ron Asheton died in and was replaced by James Williamson, and the band continued to play shows until , when they also released their last album, Ready to Die. The Stooges formally announced their breakup in due to the deaths of Scott Asheton and saxophonist Steve Mackay. The Stooges are widely regarded as a seminal proto-punk act. The Prime Movers nicknamed Osterberg "Iggy" in reference to his earlier band.

Most audiences in the early s saw the Stooges as a band of incompetent addicts with an obnoxious frontman. Prog Rock my guilty pleasure was dawning around the same time. Next to consummate craftsmen like King Crimson and Yes the Stooges looked like petulant toddlers finger-painting with their own bodily wastes. But Prog Rock died not long after the Stooges. And while that corpse remains dead, the Stooges rose to become elder statesmen to the Punk generation. But Osterberg, once a clean-cut student council member, was starting to let his hair grow long and indulge in recreational substances legal and otherwise.
