Potions are a must with fifteen Trainers wandering around in the darkness, and Repels and Escape Ropes are also helpful. The area near the entrance is pretty linear. There are five Trainers in this area, along with a Revive in the southwest corner. Earn some battle experience , and take the next ladder. Three Trainers lurk in the darkness here. Loop around to the east to get an Escape Rope , then go north to find the ladder. Another three Trainers line this part of the tunnel. A Max Ether can be found in the north; north west of the picknicker, north east of the hiker. The final ladder is located in the northwest corner. Rock Slide is a strong attack that may make the target flinch.

Don't bother searching for items or exploring these tunnels all that much. This area is basically only a connector between Route 9 and 10 -- but there are plenty of trainers to fight on the way. From the ladder, move east to grab a Repel. Move back west and take on the first trainer near the rock wall. Curl around the wall and head east. Follow the path as it bends north and take the ladder down.

Pick up as many Super Potions as you can in Vermillion City, as you'll be using them. If you don't feel like running into them, buy some Repels from Cerulean City. He'll only teach it once, and this is the most powerful Rock-type move in the game, so choose wisely! The second Fighting type Pokemon you can catch in the game, Machop is a potential bulkier replacement for a Mankey if you caught one earlier. Machop can be used effectively for most of the game, but you may choose to replace him with Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan once they become available. Machop gets tons of Fighting type moves and evolves twice, first into Machoke at level 28, and then into Machamp after being traded. While it receives some good coverage moves, including Dragon Breath at level 30 and Iron Tail at level 45, it has a poor stat distribution, including an awful HP stat, and an Attack stat lower than Rattata 's. You're better off evolving Geodude into a Graveler and using that instead, even if you can't evolve it by trading.
