Really unpleasant to find out all turtles carry Salmonella. Even with proper handwashing and sanitation, I feel I will contract it eventually during cleaning or feeding. Is this non-sense, or should we really be scared of Salmonella? As long as you use good common sense, wash your hands, keep a clean tank, no licking turtles, etc. Turtles are not the only animals that carry salmonella, dogs, cats, farm animals etc. I too was thinking it was inevitable to get it somehow. Was quite nervous. But since this is not a family of turtle lickers I thought our usual precautions would be fine. It does happen. But it also does happen when people cook chicken too. It also happens when eating tainted food as we've seen in the past year or so with peanut butter, lettuce, hamburger meat, etc. Like Julia said We understand the risk and carry on, armed with the knowledge of how to prevent it. The scary thing for me is, when anything that is tainted with Salmonella gets to the public, there is extensive media coverage and huge recalls, and yet that same bacteria is sitting in my bedroom.
