From day one, Shotscope changed on-course data collection. The company developed technology that lets RFID club tags communicate automatically with a wrist band to capture shots. However, the wrist band itself was a problem. Shotscope V2 was a considerable improvement. Unfortunately, while considerably smaller, V2 was still the size of a Royal Destroyer. Now with the V3 GPS band, Shot Scope offers a full slate of stat-tracking and peformance management features, including strokes-gained analytics.

Getting the Shot Scope V3 ready to use is very quick and easy. Install the sensors in your clubs, charge the watch and download the app. If you connect the watch and the app you can make sure all of your firmware is current. It is quick and easy then to select the course you are playing and go. The Shot Scope V3 on-course functions are as easy as it gets. While many things have moved to touchscreen, the V3 use buttons to navigate menus and options. They are fairly straight forward, but I do suggest tinkering around with the watch a little prior to your first round. As with previous models you can tag the exact location of the pin for more better putting stats. The watch collects every shot. Another feature that makes the Shot Scope V3 is the usable data in the app. Collecting data is one thing, but translating it into a way that makes sense is important. I like they way that Shot Scope shows your shots around the course on maps as well as each holes details. I think their pin tracking ability on the watch makes their putting stats the best on the market. It can track exact distances on putts which really helps formulate your ability and area for improvement.

The Shot Scope V2 launched just shy of three years ago and while it did the job of providing GPS distances and tracking shots automatically, its cumbersome size was a bit of a stumbling block. Step up the Shot Scope V3, a model which made our best golf watches guide. It is now 60 per cent smaller than the V2 and is just 10mm thick. On your wrist, therefore, it has a much lighter, more modern fit and feel, not too dissimilar to the Apple watch in fact. To get the full functionality, you need to screw the 14 tags into your clubs, which is time consuming and a little fiddly. There are some other set up instructions in the accompanying free app but you only need to do this once.

I arrived at the course and was ready to go. One spot where the watch struggles a little bit is with how quickly it puts you into putting mode when you approach the green.
