As part of a month-long promotion, satellite radio station Sirius is sponsoring a countdown of what it considers to be the top 1, country-and-western songs in music history. The list has already been played once this month and the countdown will be replayed and continued through the end of the month on Channel 4 among its hundreds of offerings. Some critics already are blasting the list as leaning away from traditional country classics and featuring too many modern songs. A complete list of the top 1, songs in spreadsheet form can be found here. Compare that with modern crooner Eric Church, who had two songs ranked among the top 22 on the list. Uh, some guy named Strait can't crack the Top 10?

This is such a nothing of a song that Rucker sings fine enough, but it is utterly inconsequential. ZK: All-wrong. ZK: I, too, can actually think of a few singles of theirs that belong about here. And this is, undoubtedly, the best version of this infectious little number. But top ? Too High. KJC: This was an enormous radio hit and helped power the duo to their first Entertainer of the Year trophies, even if its host album continued the trend of selling a million units less than its predecessor. Definitely belongs on the list, but this is Too High. ZK: There are certain lists where one could largely debate the placement of certain classics as being too low or high, provided they get to all of the good stuff. Here … well, look what the fuck got ranked ahead of this.

How-the-fuck-ever: That his highest entry is at 20 is, as so many things about this list have been, an affront to most of the things I value about country music. About Right in an absolute sense. Still feels a little Too Low , though, especially as his highest-ranked song. Too High. KJC: Songs like this feel over the top until life itself goes over the top. About Right. McGraw emotes the hell out of it, as is his wont, which overcomes some of its limitations, but nowhere near enough to have it ranked here.
