Brynjolf is a Nord thief and a member of the Thieves Guild in Riften. Brynjolf is currently the second-in-command at the Thieves Guild, below only Mercer Frey , the current Guildmaster. Brynjolf is first encountered upon entering the Riften Marketplace for the first time, or if it is after dark, in The Bee and Barb. He approaches the Dragonborn and offers to let them in on a job on which he is working. If they accept, this starts the quest. He says that he will create a diversion in the market. While everyone is distracted, the Dragonborn must break into the stall belonging to the Argonian jeweler Madesi , steal his ring , and place it into the Dunmer merchant Brand-Shei 's pocket without getting caught.

Brynjolf is a high-ranking Nord member of Skyrim 's Thieves Guild based out of Riften and one of three members of the Nightingales alongside Karliah and the Last Dragonborn. He is first found in the market area in Riften , he calls out and asks your character to do a job for him which is incriminating Brand-Shei with a ring from another merchant. After the Dragonborn successfully completes this task he says to meet him in the Ragged Flagon for and warns saying it's dangerous. If the Dragonborn makes it through the Cistern he is surprised to see them again and tries to encourage Mercer Frey to allow the Dragonborn to be a member of the thieves guild, Mercer agrees and then tasks the Dragonborn with taking down Golden-Glow Estate. He is then absent for a fair bit of the Thieves Guild Questline, but becomes the temporary leader after Mercer's betrayal to the guild. He also says that he's sorry about how the Guild treated Karliah.

This is the second quest pertaining to the Thieves Guild , acquired from Brynjolf. Brynjolf has promised me more work if I'm able to locate him at a tavern called the Ragged Flaggon. Judging from the dangerous nature of it location, it seems as though he's having me perform some type of initiation, but I can't be certain. The Ratway's entrance is located on the lower levels of Riften. Once inside, there will be two bandits , Drahff and Hewnon Black-Skeever. After they are dealt with, the Dragonborn will enter into a room. They must either pick the lock on the door to the left or take the path to the right. When you come across a merchant named Brynjolf at the Riften bazaar during the day or in The Bee and Barb at night, he will propose that you frame a vendor by planting a stolen ring on his person. The intended victim, Brand-Shei , has apparently become aware that someone is doing something wrong, and that someone wants him in jail where he can't interfere. If you accept, Brynjolf will tell you that he will create a distraction in the bazaar. While this draws people's attention, you are to steal a ring from Madesi. Madesi keeps the ring in a strongbox inside the cabinet under the counter of his stall, both of which are locked. You can unlock the cabinet and strongbox at night for an easier theft, or simply pickpocket Madesi's key off of him. Then, wait until after 4pm to actually steal the ring. Note that the ring you must steal will specifically say "Madesi's Silver Ring," rather than just any silver ring. After stealing the ring, sneak up to Brand-Shei and position yourself behind the crates he is sitting on. Pickpocket him and place the ring in his inventory.
