Miraak is a Dragonborn that lived long before the events of Skyrim and the events of the current Dragonborn that defeated Alduin. The current Dragonborn gets a chance to battle Miraak in the Dragonborn DLC and learn more about this fascinating character since there is a lot about him that isn't immediately evident when conversing and battling with him. Miraak is an interesting character because he once served the dragon cult, and there are a lot of little pieces of his history that fans completely overlooked while completing the Dragonborn DLC. Miraak is widely considered to be one of the best villains in the entire Elder Scrolls franchise because of his personality and history with dragons. Miraak may be more powerful than the average man; however, he's still mortal, and as such, he has a race from one of the ten races of Tamriel. Miraak is a Nord, and this doesn't come as too much of a surprise since he served the dragons in ancient times. Although Miraak may be a Nord, he doesn't seem to follow any of the traditional customs or have a similar accent to the Nords found in Skyrim.

At some point, he sought out the teachings of Hermaeus Mora , the Demon of Knowledge, and became his champion. Hermaeus Mora taught Miraak the power to bend the will of dragons. Using this knowledge and his innate ability to devour the souls of dragonkind, he turned on his winged overlords and killed a great number of them. Three Dragon Priests, Ahzidal , Dukaan and Zahkriisos , joined him and became his three most powerful servants, called the "Acolyte Priests". Following this, dragons razed his temple in retaliation. Hermaeus Mora protected his new champion, though Miraak became trapped in the Daedric Prince's realm.

With this forbidden knowledge in his possession, Miraak turned on his dragon masters, using it, and his power as Dragonborn, to devour their souls to become ever more powerful. However, Miraak refused to do so and instead attempted his own rebellion against the dragons. Because of his betrayal, the dragons razed his temple on Solstheim. His rebellion was unsuccessful and he was defeated by another Dragon Priest named Vahlok who was then made his jailor, restraining him to Solstheim.

When you reach the Temple of Miraak you will find that the exterior is under construction by the enthralled people of Solstheim, all of them forced by Miraak to rebuild the temple.
