Slough's first local authority was the Slough Local Board , established in This became Slough Urban District Council in In the town was granted a charter of incorporation as a municipal borough , with the council then taking the name Slough Corporation. The municipal borough was abolished under the Local Government Act on 1 April , and replaced by Slough Borough Council , when the town was also transferred from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire. The council has adopted the leader and cabinet form of governance.

Changes to the number of wards in a borough have been proposed following a review of electoral boundaries. The final layout of Slough Borough Council would see it with 21 two-ward councillors. Currently it has 13 three-councillor wards, one two-councillor ward, and one one-councillor ward. The number of councillors would remain at The Local Government Boundary Commission made the recommendations for the borough following a review. The changes will become law once approved by Parliament.
