Oddly enough perhaps Zhang Yimou's goofiest film which would seem especially jarring for a war film that wasn't trying to be comedic, but in its sheer sentimentality and commitment to sacrificing for the cause makes it, even more oddly, moving by the end; it does so by abandoning all notions of celebrating individuals, instead making everyone who was a part of it a hero worth remembering by giving equal weight to each and every countryman.
