Największą rolę MacTavish odgrywa w pierwszej odsłonie, której jest protagonistą, ale jest też grywalnym bohaterem w niektórych misjach w kolejnych dwóch kontynuacjach. To niemałe osiągnięcie, bo deweloperzy z Infinity Ward lubią w ramach kampanii mocno żonglować różnymi postaciami.
