If that name is Sony, the answer is: quite a bit. The Japanese electronics titan has experienced some ups and downs over the past decade, but the past three years in particular have seen Sony surge straight to the heart of Premiumville. In the end, the Sony won out. Caught up in the moment, we were wooed by its sleek design, a truly innovative audio system, and that classic Sony glow. Whereas most TVs require little more than 5 minutes with a Philips-head screwdriver, the Sony requires a bit more time and a lot more muscle.

I don't know because I have yet to test either, but Sony has been talking up its advantages, including image quality, audio and styling, since the sets were first announced at CES. Sony wanted to demonstrate its superior video processing, and in that demo the A1E did look better in a couple of ways -- as I expect from any demo arranged by a TV maker. I won't know how much those differences show up in real-world conditions, and whether they'll be worth Sony's steep premium, until I can test one in a full review. The other differences are more obvious. The screen of the A1E itself acts as a speaker to produce sound, so the audio emanates from the picture itself. It eliminates speakers around or behind the TV for what Sony is calling a stand-less form factor. Set on a shelf, the TV leans back slightly, supported by a sort of big kickstand.

It can produce a wide range of colors, which combined with its smooth gradients makes HDR content look great. Its motion capabilities are also excellent since no trails follow moving objects and flicker can be used to enhance clarity. Unfortunately, input lag is a bit high with a p input, and the easel stand always sits on an incline. Superb TV overall. Terrific TV for movies.
What do you get when you put an OLED organic light-emitting diode display in the hands of the Sony with their decades of experience enhancing TV images? Not so with the A1E, whose facility with picture minutiae, while not LCD-like, is a substantial improvement. Sadly, the experience left us somewhat torn between which we liked most. One minor area where the A1E falls a bit short of its rivals is wall mounting. The integrated stand also ships with a removable cover so you can hide the cable attachments. We tested the inch class Have a friend on hand—standard advice for this class of TV—to minimize the chance of damage. The one area where we were a bit disappointed with the A1E was its remote.

Its new A1 OLED series is out now in inch and inch sizes - which gives them plenty of room for squeezing in 4K pixel counts. Blacks are as pure as can be thanks to OLED's ability to shut off individual pixels. The response time of the A1E is almost instantaneous, resulting in only a very short trail of persistence blur following fast moving objects.
