If the icons are to the left in the status bar, there are not system icons and are mostly from downloaded applications, but there are some exceptions. System icons are always to the right in the status bar, for example, battery level, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and so forth. Most of the time it's pretty easy to see which application the icons belongs to by just dragging down the notification bar and having a look at the icon next to the notifications.
