Instead, it became the biggest movie of all time. Along the way, it grew into more than just a film cycle, with TV series, animation, novels, comic books, and ancillary products of every imaginable kind added to the list. It's even included a few movies outside the Skywalker Saga , with more in various stages of development.

The craftwork just does not compare due to their pared-down budgets, effects cheats, and cut-to-commercial television pacing. Nothing but respect to Warwick Davis , though, who gives his all as Wicket in both Ewok films. We honor them for existing, but we do not rank them.

Abrams does well at raising intriguing questions, he's less skilled at answering them. If anything, the problem with Solo: A Star Wars Story is a script that pulls both ways: it wants to be a gritty, down-and-removed smuggler tale under a totalitarian government, yet at every turn must tie itself into the wider mythos. To use the Force properly, you see, a Jedi must purge his or her emotions, particularly anger and fear. Boyega's Finn has a compelling stormtrooper-gone-good backstory, and Ridley's palpable exuberance vanquishes a generation of dreary prequel protagonists. Empire built its legacy on narrative darkness: the cruel Vader twist, the sight of Han in carbonite. Directed By: Rian Johnson. The heart of the movie belongs to the surprising redemption of Darth Vader David Prowse and James Earl Jones as some spark of fatherly love for Luke causes him to chuck Emperor Palpatine into the reactor core. The Clone Wars earns its not-totally-awful place on this ranked list because, while it might be a bit repetitive, it at least introduced one of our favourite Star Wars characters, Ahsoka Tano, and it also eventually gave birth to a pretty decent spin-off TV show of the same name. The bad : Finding out Anakin's mother had been freed from slavery to get married is supposed to be uplifting? Synopsis: Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of Fisher's brave, I'll-rescue-my-own-damn-self princess! And however contrived his arrival, it's hard to say no to Ian McDiarmid's Emperor. The bad: L3's uncomfortable ending, and the misuse of some otherwise charming actors. Already a subscriber? Saddled with a mandate to tell three stories simultaneously and a plot that moves in circles , Johnson gives each story line its own distinctive palette. In that area at least, you can argue Lucas was just ahead of the curve. What's the Tomatometer? Lucas makes his story much more complex, as Anakin is really the target of what we could reasonably call a child predator in Senator Palpatine. Captain Rex! This sees it coast through a choppily edited second act watch it again and no scene connects well to the next and to a thrilling cliffhanger literally.
