The Shroud is an immaterial realm of pure psionic energy outside of the physical universe. All sentient species are linked in some way to the Shroud, however only a few will achieve the psionic ascension necessary to draw on its power directly. Upon completion, the Shroud will be added to the Contacts menu from where it can be entered to interact with the innumerable psionic entities native to it, following visions from both within and without the Galaxy to reach either a positive or negative outcome. Entering the Shroud requires Energy and adds the Mustering Psionic Strength empire modifier for 5 years, which makes the Shroud unavailable. The Psionic Archive relic reduces the duration to 2. There are 5 incomprehensibly powerful beings from the Shroud that may take notice of an empire entering the shroud and offer to form a Covenant.

This stellaris shroud was further expanded upon by introducing a new precursor empire in the Ancient Relics DLCcalled the Zroni.
The Shroud is the place from where psionic species and individuals draw their power and a place where those who awakened their psionic potential could see in their dreams. The realm is inhabited by powerful beings of pure psionic energy that can be communed with through great effort. This realm was further expanded upon by introducing a new precursor empire in the Ancient Relics DLC , called the Zroni. A psionically adept race, the Zroni were the first to ever contact the Shroud and commune with the entities that exist there. As a cost of one of their deals with these entities, their species and empire was destroyed, with the rare strategic resource known as Zro being their only lasting legacy, a warning for all who would consider dealing with the Shroud.

There are 3 ways to gain a patron's attention:. One year after both a Covenant was formed and the Psionics tradition tree is finished, the empire will be asked to confirm or renounce the covenant. Confirming will allow the Covenant to grant new effects once enough favor has been obtained.
