Strong first published his Concordance in , while professor of exegetical theology at Drew Theological Seminary. Strong's Concordance provides an index to the Bible. This allows the reader to find words where they appear in the Bible. It also lets the reader directly compare how the same word may be used elsewhere in the Bible. Each original-language word Hebrew or Greek is given an entry number in the dictionary of those original language words listed in the back of the concordance.

The basis of the whole work is the first and much the largest portion, to which this Preface more particularly applies. The design and use of the succeeding portions are explained in the Prefaces to them respectively. The present work is entitled "The Exhaustive Concordance" of the text of the English Bible ordinarily in use, because it is the only one hitherto constructed that gives all the words of that book and all the passages where they are found; and in this respect no Concordance can ever be made more perfect.
