Future Trunks is undoubtedly a standout character from Dragon Ball Z , and his return in Dragon Ball Super was a perplexing yet welcome start to the series' fourth saga. While Trunks' character did have a few emotional moments with his father and younger alternate self, there was one particular aspect of his development that seemed a bit out of place for his character. This, of course, pertains to the debut of Super Saiyan Rage, a new transformation specific to Trunks, which played an important role in the final battle against Goku Black and Future Zamasu. Although Trunks had attained the strength level of Super Saiyan 2 after his last appearance in Dragon Ball Z , this new form came almost out of the blue, and its place in the series' power scale as a whole has confused fans for quite some time now. In fact, the main conflict of the Future Trunks Saga may have been resolved in a better way without the introduction of this transformation, which was riddled with inaccuracies in many respects.

An anime-only transformation unique to Future Trunks , its name is reflective of the intense anger he felt before assuming the transformation. It continues to fuel them! Shin : Indeed! Trunks ' energy is increasing with unbelievable intensity! The Ultimate Power of an Absolute God ". During his first transformation, Future Trunks initially appears as a Super Saiyan 2, before temporarily but drastically bulking up in a manner similar to Super Saiyan Third Grade while shrouded in blue bioelectricity. Additionally, his hair spikes up even further than before occasionally it still resembles his Super Saiyan 2 hair afterwards. Due to the unbelievable amplification of anger brought about by the transformation, Future Trunks temporarily had blank eyes as a sign of his near-berserk state much like Pseudo Super Saiyan and Legendary Super Saiyan. In this form, he possesses the same intense blue glow his original Rage form had, as well as an initially white aura that eventually expands into a fiery blue aura. The Miraculous Power of Unyielding Warriors ". Various media differ in how they designate the form, but the Dragon Ball Super Card Game refers to it as both forms. When transforming for the first time, Future Trunks' eruption of force resembled a colossal geyser of golden ki that temporarily lit up the darkened sky and sent massive ripples of blue lightning across the desolate landscape.

The hair of the user grows more and becomes much spikier, like a combination of Super Saiyan Third Grade and Super Saiyan 2. Golden Great Ape Legendary.

The transformation seems to combine several traits of other Super Saiyan forms all together. The hair of the user grows more and becomes much spikier, like a combination of Super Saiyan Third Grade and Super Saiyan 2. When first achieved, the user also loses their irises with their eyes becoming completely white, however when the user masters the power they gain lighter green irises. The users' muscle mass also briefly increases immensely before shrinking back to normal, giving a sharp power increase without losing speed. Finally, the user's ki gains an dual aura: the outer being the golden aura of a normal Super Saiyan while the inner has a similar aura to that of Super Saiyan Blue—overall bearing a resemblance to the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan transformations. After absorbing the power made by the Earthlings, the user's aura turns completely blue like Super Saiyan Blue. The power of the form is immense.

Though he was stronger than ever, Future Trunks still returned to the prime Dragon Ball timeline for assistance from Goku and the Z Fighters against a new threat menacing his alternate future: the villainous Zamasu. As the final battle against Zamasu raged, the evil god merged two alternate versions of himself from alternate timelines to become even more terrifyingly powerful. But, pushed to the very brink, Future Trunks unveiled a new transformation of his own that turned the tide of battle against his divine enemy: Super Saiyan Rage. Even with this transformation in hand, Future Trunks was still unable to defend his world from Goku Black , a version of Goku from an alternate timeline whose body was possessed by Zamasu. And as the Z Fighters joined Future Trunks in his own timeline to take on Merged Zamasu, it was ultimately up to Trunks to deal the final blow against the villain using Super Saiyan Rage, which is now Trunks' most powerful transformation yet in the official Dragon Ball canon.

The mastered SS3 theory doesn't work for me because it would've been much better to just give him SS3 and say he has fully mastered the form without having to change the actual appearence of SS3. As the final battle against Zamasu raged, the evil god merged two alternate versions of himself from alternate timelines to become even more terrifyingly powerful. This is quite convenient when looking at how the form influenced the outcome of the arc's final battle. Farewell, Trunks! Perhaps this is the completed version of that form. Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise including movies, spin-offs, etc. Post by JulieYBM » Mon Jun 14, pm The powers that be tend to not want to give explanations for these things, likely because they don't want to set precedent. When Future Trunks takes on this form, he first becomes a Super Saiyan 2, his eyes then go blank as his appearance alters to that of his Super Saiyan Third Grade , before a blue aura overtakes him and his muscles revert to their normal size, completing the transformation. The Goku Black arc was arguably the most important story arc for Dragon Ball Super at the time of its release. Whether or not you think Super actually proves any of this with the Goku Black arc, one thing is clear: Super Saiyan Rage is really cool, right? Not only does Future Trunks play an active role this arc, he actually gets a brand new transformation that lets him fight head on with the main villains alongside Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta.

Trunks unlocked the form by getting really frustrated and mad at Goku Black and Zamasu, for what that's worth, so it could reasonably have a connection to saiyan anger boosts. Super Saiyan Rage. This form is very similar to Vegeta's enraged Super Saiyan 2 state , as both are massive power-ups to the Super Saiyan 2 form which temporarily blank out the user's eyes and are achieved through rage, however, the Super Saiyan Rage form involves utilization of the Powerhouse state in its usage, while Vegeta's power-up does not. If that is the case, then that helps explain why the Trunks form has such an enormous power-up. However, Future Trunks in this form is not playable.
