Tamatoa the Crab is the secondary antagonist in Moana. He is a large crab with imposing claws and is from Lalotai. He is supposedly a collector of valuable trinkets, lots of them being shiny. Tamatoa is a giant blue crab with yellow towards the tip of his claws. He now has 9 legs used to have 10, but his leg was ripped off by Maui. He has gold and treasure on his shell and was the stealer of Maui's fish hook, which he placed in the center of his shiny treasure. Tamatoa is a gargantuan coconut crab that hails from Lalotai, a realm inhabited by monsters.

In order to feel happy he has spent his days trying to make his outward appearance beautiful. He has gathered shiny objects that sparkle and he has attached them to himself. He states that the idea of beauty being on the inside is actually a lie that we are told by our family and our grandparents and by society in general. He believes that this is a falsehood that we tell each other in order to make ourselves feel good. I get the sense that his beliefs and feelings are based on his experience of being bullied and put down as a child.

According to Tala, many sought the heart for its power, and among these ancient entities was Tamatoa, though Maui was the only one capable of actually stealing the heart. Tamatoa also has a twisted sense of humor, specifically shown when he nonchalantly commented that it took a week to eat his grandmother and blamed the delay on her enormous size in a dry tone. There are some instances where the pitch of Tamatoa's voice drops significantly, which makes his tone deeper and more monstrous. He can no longer be beat.
