In August of Tamron released an updated version of its mm telephoto zoom lens, with a few notable improvements. Tamron 70 300 vc portrait first and most obvious is the addition of Vibration Control VC technology, to reduce the effect of camera shake and provide sharper images. The lens appears to be completely redesigned, with 4 additional lens elements and a new autofocus system.

This has been a very welcome addition to the market, because the Nikkor had been alone price-wise, and third-party options were not up to the standards. Fortunately, the Tamron is a very viable alternative and it even has some characteristics that surpass its direct rival, as we will see. This mm is the first Tamron lens having the new USD Ultrasonic Silent Drive auto-focus motor for fast and silent focusing, and also the first including their innovative optical stabilizer mechanism, VC Vibration Compensation. Indeed, the lens is very silent and rather quick focusing, but may hunt at times in areas with low contrast, the same happening in low light situations, otherwise the lens focuses quickly. The Tamron is a big fat lens and even with the D is a little front-heavy, but not overly so. The lens allows full-time manual focusing without the need to turn the lens or camera to manual focus.

Yes i'm curious about it too. But i'm concerned it might still be too bulky for me despite being the most compact lens of its kind. Nonetheless it looks very interesting. Best regards, Mic. Hi Mic, it's amazing how much sharp this lens is! Which camera have you used here? Hi MeiL. I'm assuming you mean the new Tamron VC, right? In any case, I don't have experience with either lens, so I couldn't tell you. For example, you may want to consider the resale value. Hope this helps! Hi Nada. This lens is the VC.

Nicely sized and ribbed focus and zoom ring appear tightly integrated with the plastic lens barrel. Which camera have you used here? Hit the jump for samples.

Riding above the typical mm focal length range found in kit and general purpose lenses, the mm or similar focal length range is extremely popular - easily covering the range I typically recommend to someone interested in a second lens. Note: I don't consider the gap between 55mm and 70mm to be significant. Either way, the difference between 70mm and mm is obvious. And the overall range is useful. Generating a list of uses for a mm lens is a daunting task it includes family life, vacations, landscapes, travel, wildlife , but the relatively narrow aperture typically found in this class of lens removes low light action from its uses list.

A new throughbred. High resolution zoom bred for fast focusing. With an XLD lens element to deliver high resolution, image stabilization and a turbo speed silent autofocus, Tamron's new telephoto zoom makes it easy to capture the most difficult shots. The new optical design of Tamron's advanced telephoto zoom lens delivers a whole new world of possibilities. It allows the photographer to draw the subject close and separate them from their background, creating photographs with spectacular contrast and depth.

Slight barrel distortion at 70mm quickly changes to modest pincushion distortion at mm. I use it on Nikon Ds. Again, this attribute is shared by all lenses in this class. I have had quite some lenses. It outperforms the Nikkor VR much. The focus and zoom rings are smooth with little play. It does offer SSM focusing. Tamron's published MTF data is shown below: Image Stabilization Image stabilization is always difficult to test in any quantitative fashion. Hope this helps! Filters attached to this lens will not rotate with focus changes. The difference in image quality between the L and the Tamron VC is readily apparent in the results. Autofocus Operation Tamron has employed a new focusing system with this lens, the Ultrasonic Silent Drive.

The only downside and it is a very, very small downside is when the VC engages, you look thru the view finder and the image jumps in a snap. VC is extremely effective. Like the rest of the lenses in its class, the VC extends significantly when zoomed to mm. Nice feel overall with silent and fast AF in most situations, the zoom ring could be damped for smoother operation. My standard disclaimer: There are some potential issues with third party lenses. As the lens is zoomed out the distortion type switches to pincushion somewhere between 75 and 80mm and gradually increases to something like 0. There are seven Nikon lenses with a 62mm filter size in my database, but Canon owners may be buying a set of filters specifically for this lens - a cost that must be considered. There is also the risk of a problem that results in the lens and body manufacturers directing blame at each other. Some shots are focused accurately while backfocusing occurs as frequently as frontfocusing. Hope this helps! Shot directly against the sun. Technically, the Tamron overall sharpness probably peaks at around f8 center and f11 corner at all focal lengths, but the difference between wide open and stopped down is quite small and shooting wide open and hence with a faster shutter speed or lower ISO setting will often give the best results. Of course, the image gets a little soft at mm but within the acceptable range.
