A bot is a computer-controlled player on a server. AI bots are coded with sophisticated artificial intelligence designed to emulate player actions in game, and can be used without enabling cheats. Puppet bots have no AI coding, but are useful for testing and training. Puppet bots require the server to have cheats enabled, which also disables achievements. Additionally, their classes are chosen at random. There is one exception, however; Bots do not see Deathcam shots when killed; therefore, a player cannot attain Deathcam-related achievements.

From when I remember, bots were used to farm items for profit. The bad actor would program the bots to play kind of normally, so as not to be conspicuous, and it would get random drops, then they would trade them back to the bad actor. However, that's clearly not what's going on here. This seems wholly malicious, and there's a lot of people doing it, it seems like. What is the motivation behind this? So therefore it seems to mostly be aimed at killing the game. And it was snuffing the life out of it pretty good for a little bit there.

I was thinking of emailing some Valve people, but first I want to throw the idea out there for discussion, feedback, proofreading, and possible signatures from people that support it. I believe Valve's focus in combating the issue should be on the bot accounts themselves and their creator s , however patches that have been made to the game thus far address only their abilities. I understand that legal action against their creator s is not necessarily feasible or worth the investment. Probably the biggest issue with removing bots is distinguishing between a normal user's account and that of a bot. I do not know what methods of identifying these accounts are in use currently, but I assume it is a difficult task to fully automate. I suggest abandoning the idea of automation for now, and instead outsourcing the task to the player base. As your employees cannot be omnipresent, grant those who are the players the ability to resolve the issue.
