They have no plan where they are going and show little care or interest. While looking for gas money, they ransack a house before being interrupted by its occupants, who are shot in cold blood.

What happened: Carl Isaacs and brother Wayne Coleman each shot each one of the men one by one, and then Mary was brutally raped by Carl and Wayne; later also by George Dungee, before she herself was shot to death about six miles from the trailer. Jerry's other family members showed up at the property and were also murdered.
