Redirecting monsters: You can force monsters to go a certain way or direction as they try to shake you off. This opens up additional strategic options like, say, guiding a Diablos toward a special wall to get its horns stuck or any large monster toward a trap to hold it in place. Maybe I'm missing something, but for me it's been VERY inconsistent whether attempting to redirect monsters or flinch them forward actually makes it happen. I haven't seen any connections between successes or failures that make it so I can know ahead of time whether either thing will actually work. Not blaming the game for this yet , but idk if it's MEANT to be inconsistent or if I'm misunderstanding the mechanics, though they seem straightforward.
