The Dukes is a theatre in Lancaster , England. As well as producing two theatre productions each year, it also hosts a varied programme of touring theatre, comedy, live music and dance. It also has a reputation for screening independent cinema and in won Northern Soul's Cinema of the Year Award. The Queen, who also held the title of " Duke of Lancaster ", gave her permission for the use of the name and the theatre was opened by Paymaster General and Minister for the Arts, Viscount Eccles. The theatre has three auditoria across two separate buildings. In the main building "The Rake" is the larger space seating approximately , with "The Round" studio space seating approximately The Dukes Centre for Creative Learning, a short walk up Moor Lane, has its own dedicated space for youth and community projects and performances.

It took a year to convert St Anne's Church into Lancaster's civic theatre. Walter was the first former Dukes actor to become a Dame. She appeared in fourteen productions between and The Dukes broke new ground with our first ever 'Play in the Park'. We opened our second building, now known as Moor Space, in another former church just up Moor Lane. The building was completely reimagined, being transformed from an empty shell into the home of our youth theatre. I performed here in 14 plays on the trot, playing a wide variety of plays, and I remember my time in Lancaster with great fondness. The show was one of the most successful plays in the park in the history of The Dukes. It was the second time The Hobbit had been staged, the first back in The Dukes is fantastic.
