As a kid sleigh riding down a snowy hill in Astoria Park , he never even dreamed of one day competing for a spot on the United States Olympic Team. But for the last year, Thomas Santagato , 26, has been in upstate Lake Placid at the Olympic training center competing for a spot on the USA team in the Olympics in Russia in a sport called skeleton — a kind of one-man bobsledding — where top athletes race down a snowy track at 80 mph. Santagato played baseball and football for Immaculate Conception Youth Program near the Con Ed plant in Astoria and would later play safety and center back on the St. Francis Prep football team. After graduating from college, Santagato taught physical education to special ed kids at Public School in Fresh Meadows. But I looked at the physical requirements and I thought I met those criteria. So to pass the time, I filled out the application. When I got there, I realized I was the right size for skeleton. Everybody was just about my size. After four days at the camp, a coach approached me and said that if I stuck with it that in a couple of years I could be really good.
