In this review we take a look at my top 5 artist grade colored pencils, this is not quite hot on the heals of my Top 5 Budget Colored Pencils which you can see by clicking the link. Now I have no idea if what I am about to say is an official status or if it is just something I have made up, and what I mean by official is if the UK Colored Pencil Society or Colored Pencil Society of America have officially created these categories, but here goes. In the seven years that I have been reviewing colored pencils and other art supplies, I have come to the conclusion that there is a difference between, Artist Grade and Artist Quality colored pencils. Let me explain. In my opinion, a colored pencil that is Artist Grade has been lightfast tested only under the Blue Wool or ASTM system, and you will be surprised at how few there are in this group. An Artist Quality colored pencil, again in my opinion, is a colored pencils that is in house lightfast tested, the pencil blends well, layers beautifully, is available open stock and general helps to create beautiful art.

Over the years of running The Art Gear Guide, uploading reviews and loving art in general, I am often asked by viewers and subscribers to tell them what my own personal top 5 artist quality colored pencils are, or my top 5 budget colored pencils are, etc. I always declined the option to do this because, my favourite art supplies are my favourite because of the pressure I apply to the pencils, or the paper I use, the genre of art I use them for etc. Therefore my top art products may not work for you for exactly the reasons I have just highlighted. Nevertheless, so long as you understand that the pencils in this list are my top 5 budget colored pencils and I will tell you why each pencil is in the list, you also need to understand that the term budget is a term I despise, budget for me may not be budget to the next man or women. The pencils in this list are there because I feel they are worth the money comparatively speaking to other pencils in the market. I have made sure that the pencils in this list work beautifully across different papers, Bristol Smooth , Bristol Velum and Mixed Media paper, I have also made sure that they work along side other art mediums such as on top of watercolors or alcohol markers. I have also made sure that all 5 of the pencils in the list perform in adult colouring books and other crafting projects, although they are in what may be considered a budget list, I made sure that they are pencils artists can use and create beautiful art with. None of the pencils in this list are lightfast tested, they are not pencils that you can use and sell your original art as a lightfast piece of work, however there is nothing stopping you from using the pencils and selling archival prints of your work. All of the pencils in this list are heavily pigmented and a joy to use, each and every pencil will allow you as an artist to create beautiful work. Starting from number 5 and working our way to number 1, I have placed the Brutfuner Square set at number 5, I torn between the Brutfuner Square set and the Moma Muji Colored Pencils from Japan, but their price knocked them out of the list. The Brutfuner Square set offers a beautiful palette across the board, the lay down and blend ability of the Brutfuner Square are equally exceptional for such a well priced set of pencils. As mentioned I have a much more detailed review of the Brutfuner Square Colored Pencils which you can check out. I think this is a fantastic price for colored pencils with such versatility. I have to be honest with you, for me personally I absolutely love these colored pencils and if it was not for one simple thing, this set would be number 2 or 1.

The colors are vibrant, unique, and they are easy to work with and blend together. The Luminance are lightfast graded by the ASTM system and because of this, Derwent went against all the Blue Wool testing they had done with every pencil in their range prior so that they could compete against the Luminance. This is by no means the full list of affordable coloring pencils available. They are not really comparable to the Prismacolor pencils, but they are still a good quality pencil, and they are a MUCH more affordable price.

I am really impressed at how well the Arteza pencils performed against the Prismacolor pencils, and consider these to be a very good quality pencil for the price. When I look at the Derwent Lightfast range of colours, in my mind and this is only my opinion, I feel the palette is best suited to landscape and botanical. I am aware it is not the pencil creating the art but the artist, nevertheless, the pencil helps, not all of us are the type of artist who can create magic with a Bic Biro.
