Hi, have had wet carpets front and back for a while now. I finally removed carpet to the back seat row to expose bare floor. When sitting level and not driving, even in heavy rain, water does not enter. So I drove the vehicle in a pouring rain and whenever I braked, water was seen oozing from the side floor body wall BEHIND the driver's, and to a lesser extent, the passenger seat as well. I removed the floor side plastic trim at the entrance to the back seat row on both sides. When I injected water into the holes in the frame that the molding fit into, with the car FLAT, level and parked, it just drained out the bottom. BUT, when I put the car into a downward facing slant, with ramps under the back tires and do the same, I reproduce the leakage into the passenger compartment in exactly the same place as seen when driving.

The source of the leak turned out to be missing rubber grommet hole plugs under the rear bumper. Water was flowing into the holes and collecting inside the frame of the car, eventually making its way into the cabin. The same principle can also be applied when troubleshooting water leaks on other models of Toyota or Lexus cars, as they often share similar parts and frame design. A water leak can cause corrosion or some serious damage to the electric system, and in my case to the hybrid battery located on the floor under the rear passenger seat. It can also cause mold and bad smell if the water stays on the carpet for too long. The problem was well hidden from plain sight. I tried many of their suggestions, like cleaning sunroof or AC condenser draining tubes, checking doors and roof racks insulation, door trim and windows weather moldings, etc. Months went by, and I kept dealing with wet carpets and kept checking online forums for the latest updates on this problem. At that point, I was willing to try anything in Florida it rains every single day in summer…. Removing the rear bumper cover was quite easy.
I had looked everywhere. So glad to have found a fix for this problem due to a very crappy design on Toyota's part.

I discovered lately that water drips continuously into the driver side floor from the cable hanger clip hole just below the fuse box. I check the drains, it was unclogged. I have checked all the solutions to similar problem but none address this type of issue specifically. Any ideas what can be done to resolve this please? My car is a HL sport with 60k mileage.

Outstanding help!!! GuruDBT answered 5 months ago. Content will be removed if CarGurus becomes aware that it violates our policies. I had just installed the missing plugs and sealed them so they wouldn't fall out again. Own this car? I need to find out if there is a Toyota service bulletin that covers this. I used some of that really tacky windshield adhesive around the sides of the plugs and stuck them back in place, even followed up with duct tape over that. I check the carpet after each rainfall and still completely dry. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. We tried to immediately and thoroughly dry up the water and moisture in the carpet, but it would come back every single time after it rained outside.
If your Toyota Highlander is leaking water, it could mean a few different things are happening. Some water is completely acceptable. It depends on the situation.

Hi, have had wet carpets front and back for a while now. Thanks again. The insulation panels were a wreck to I traced those on the back of the carpet, removed them, and used them as templates for replacement insulation from a carpet shop. Guru9BCW5 answered 2 years ago.
