Turn closet into mudroom

Right when you walk into our house we have this coat closet.

I am back today with a little more information about how we converted our hallway coat closet into a mudroom. Great timing huh? It was madness but it was done in time for the holiday and it has worked out great. It kind of makes me break out in hives just to see it. Much better! I try to just keep the ones we are wearing every day in here, I admit that it will be nice when it warms up to have less hanging on the hooks.

In our second home in Virginia with 2 young kids, having a functional entryway mudroom was a must-have space in our home. We needed a place to put all the gear we used in a 4-season climate snow boots, summer hats, and more! Those galvanized storage bins were indestructible though and totally worth the extra cost! However, I want to work our way around this house replacing the baseboard since the previous owners had a cat or dog that destroyed the baseboard in some areas. With two in school now, and four in footwear, we have quickly run out of space for book bags, shoes, and coats. The wheels starting turning, and I took a little look at my own coat closet. We cut three laminate shelf boards the width of our closet. The bench pictured is from Target and used to be brown. We purchased 2 Ikea racks but only used the hooks.
