Cognitive science is a diverse field that is unified and motivated by a single basic inquiry: What is cognition? UC San Diego has been at the forefront of this exciting field and the Department of Cognitive Science was the first of its kind in the world. It is part of an exceptional scientific community and remains a dominant influence in the field it helped create. In addition to preparing undergraduates for careers in a variety of sciences, the major also provides an excellent background for many professional fields, including medicine, clinical psychology, and information technology. The concerns of cognitive science fall into three broad categories: the brain—the neurological anatomy and processes underlying cognitive phenomena; behavior—the cognitive activity of individuals and their interaction with each other and their sociocultural environment, including the use of language, information, and media; and computation—the capacity of mathematical and computer systems to model cognitive and neural phenomena and represent information, and the role of computers as cognitive tools. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the department by sharing their ideas about curriculum, research, and other topics with faculty and staff. Undergraduate students should join the Cognitive Science Student Association, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to meet students and faculty from UC San Diego and other institutes, visit research laboratories, and make job contacts. Graduate students take an especially active role in shaping the department, both academically and administratively, while they gain experience in research, teaching, and managing both labs and department affairs. The BS requires completion of more rigorous lower-division course work and additional upper-division level computation course.

Course focus will be on practical and applied skills in asking data-informed questions, data wrangling, data visualization, building statistical learning models, and communicating your findings to advance your career. This course reviews research investigating the neural bases for human mental processes, including processing of affective, social, linguistic, and visuospatial information, as well as memory, attention, and executive functions. Genetics and Individuality 4 Evidence for the heritability and for the association of genetic variants with behavioral and neural phenotypes will be reviewed. Neural activity patterns underlying vision, touch, audition, proprioception, and head orientation are examined in detail. Research is showing that cellular metabolic processes are mediating normal and abnormal brain function. Seminar on Special Topics 1—4 Specific topics in cognitive science are discussed. Genes, Brains, and Behavior 4 Evidence for genetic mediation of behavioral and neural differences, mechanisms that may mediate these effects, and the roles of the environment and experience are discussed. Specifically, structure and function of neurons, peripheral and central nervous systems, sensory, motor, and control systems, learning and memory mechanisms. The course examines features of neural dynamics that map spatial and temporal relationships. This course will provide an interactive and hands-on introduction to rhythms and large-scale electrical potentials of the brain. Topics include conditioning, automaticity, divided attention, memory systems, and the nature of mental representation. Introduction to Research Methods 4 Introduction to the scientific method. Introduction to Computing 4 Covers the fundamental concepts that underlie all programming languages and provides an introduction to the essential information about algorithms and data structures. Focuses on ethnographic methods, their history, and their application. Why do we make music in such diverse ways around the globe? From Sleep to Attention 4 This course will combine an examination of the neural character of quiet and active sleep states and their potential functions with an examination of the different mechanisms by which the brain mediates attention to specific features of the world. It will also provide the opportunity to develop a thesis on the topic of their choice and begin work under faculty supervision. Lectures will focus on the dynamics of neural activity in cortical and subcortical structures as they relate to sensory processing, motor control, attention, arousal state, and memory. Social Computing 4 This course explores the intersection of social behavior and computational systems. Laboratory rotations provide students with experience in the various experimental methods used in cognitive science.
