Uglydoll is a brand and series of plush toys created by Sun-Min Kim , based on an idea by Kim and her husband David Horvath. Uglydoll started with a letter Horvath wrote to Kim after she had to move away due to an expiring student visa. The letter had a cartoon of his character "Wage" at the bottom with the words, "Working hard to make our dreams come true so we can be together again soon," next to it. As a surprise gift, Kim sewed a doll of Wage and sent it to Horvath in the mail. Horvath showed Wage to his magazine publisher friend, Eric Nakamura , owner of the Giant Robot magazine and store, who thought Horvath was pitching him a product and immediately ordered a few more for his shop.

UglyDolls is a animated musical adventure - comedy film directed by Kelly Asbury and written by Alison Peck, from a story by Robert Rodriguez , who also produced. It is based on the plush toys of the same name by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim , and follows a group of them as they try to find owners in the "Big World" despite their flaws. Among these dolls is Moxy, who dreams of the 'Big World' and being loved by a child, despite Uglyville's Mayor Ox assuring her this concept is a myth. One day, Moxy enters the tunnel to find her way to the Big World, followed by the town's cynical chef Wage, easy-going Ugly Dog, shy wiseman Lucky Bat, and soft-hearted giant Babo. The vain and superficial leader of the institute, Lou, tells Moxy and her friends that they cannot hope to pass the training for the Gauntlet - an obstacle course based on a human house, which determines if a doll will be allowed to use the portal to the Big World. Faced with Moxy's positivity, Lou relents and lets them train; however, he sends his three Spy Girls to find out where Moxy's group came from.
