Areca catechu is a species of palm which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa. Its fruits called areca nuts or betel nuts are chewed together with slaked lime and betel leaves for their stimulant and narcotic effects. Common names in English include areca palm , areca nut palm , betel palm , betel nut palm , Indian nut , Pinang palm and catechu. India is the largest producer and consumer of areca nut in the world. The areca nut is not a true nut, but rather a fruit categorized as a drupe. It is commercially available in dried, cured and fresh forms. Commercial cultivation of areca nut is more successful in India.
