Vicki Vale is a beautiful prize-winning photojournalist who attempted to uncover the secret of the mysterious Batman and inadvertently became the object of obsession for the Joker. Vicki spent several weeks photographing the aftermath of the Corto Maltese Revolution. Vicki joined the Gotham Globe where she teamed up with reporter Alexander Knox to track down the mysterious Batman. Vicki invited Alexander as her "plus one" for Bruce Wayne's charity benefit at Wayne Manor in the hope that they might get a lead on the existence of Batman from one of the guests, particularly Commissioner Gordon , and did not suspect that their host for the night was, in fact, Batman. Vicki and Alexander found themselves lost inside the cavernous Wayne Manor, and eventually ended up in Bruce's Armory. Unbeknownst to Vicki and Alexander, a bemused Bruce quietly followed them as they made several snide comments about his armory collection. Bruce then introduced himself to a surprised Vicki as he had told her during the party earlier that he didn't know who Bruce Wayne was. Bruce then asked Vicki out on a dinner date. During dinner at Wayne Manor, the two had trouble communicating as they each sat at the end of an incredibly long dining table. When Vicki asked if he liked eating in there, Bruce admitted that he had never been in the room before, much to Vicki's amusement. He then suggested that they have dinner somewhere else, which Vicki gladly accepted. The two were later seen in a cozier room with his butler, Alfred , who told them stories about Bruce, which Vicki liked. After Alfred left, Vicki expressed her affection for Alfred, and remarked to Bruce that Alfred really loved him a lot, which Bruce agreed with.

This time around, we head back to August to see Vicki Vale, Batman's answer to Lois Lane, make her comic book debut. As I've said many times over the years, to the point where I get that I'm a broken record on this topic but, well, come on, man, it's an important topic , is that the comic book industry, just like TV and films, is very often a monkey-see-monkey-do setup, so when one thing works out, there will be countless imitators. And honestly, that's cool, as very often, it's the implementation of the idea that really is the most important thing than the basic idea itself. How many great riffs on Superman have there been over the years? MANY, right? Stephen Sondheim's Follies is an excellent music, it doesn't matter that the songs for the shows were all pastiches of different composer' styles. With that in mind, though, it is pretty hilarious when creators at the same comic book company crib concepts from each other, and one of the most notable examples occurred 75 years ago in August 's Batman 49 by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Lew Sayre Schwartz adn Charles Paris, when they decided that, hey, if people liked Superman and Lois Lane's deal so much, why not just do the same with Batman and a new female reporter character named Vicki Vale?
The story focused on Batman as he battled former mobster Jack Napier following his transformation into the mentally-unhinged Clown Prince of Crime. Meanwhile, Vale and her colleague Alexander Knox, played by Robert Wuhl, attempted to uncover information about the shadowy vigilante, a task further complicated by Vale's romance with Wayne. Basinger took on the role after Sean Young suffered an injury just before filming. Basinger understood Vale's purpose in the movie. I had to be the damsel; I hate to say this, in distress, at the end. Despite Basinger's successful collaborative relationship with Burton, she didn't return for the next film. However, Burton, who Warner Bros. Burton brought on Daniel Waters, who penned the script for the dark comedy, Heathers.

The film also gave us perhaps the most well-known portrayal of Vicki Vale, the photojournalist who begins by lightly mocking Bruce in his own home and ends up very nearly getting him to confess his secret identity to her on the second date. This is no small feat, and it got us to thinking about Vale and her portrayal over the many decades of her existence as a character. With Vale, what readers end up with more often than not is a version of Lois with none of the bark or bite of our beloved star Daily Planet reporter. Meanwhile, in the comics, Vale continued on in her capacity as the occasional love interest of the forever hot and cold Bruce Wayne until she was essentially replaced by the original Batwoman. Though we know a much different Batwoman today , in her original incarnation, she was a dynamic circus performer who sought to wed our Caped Crusader, and her sheer determination sent the easily distracted Vale in directions unknown. Vale still made appearances on occasion, though her role was reduced to the point of being nearly nonexistent — that is, until it became literally nonexistent. In the mids, editor Julius Schwartz took over the Bat-line and opted to remove characters he felt were extraneous. Of course, that all brings us to 's Batman , in which Vale was chosen to appear as the love interest of Bruce Wayne, much as she had in her early appearances. Batman is a really interesting movie, but, for the most part, that has nothing to do with Vale from a character standpoint.
