West and Zampella previously co-founded Infinity Ward and created the Call of Duty franchise, where they were responsible for its development until Respawn's debut game, the first-person shooter Titanfall , was released in On December 1, , the studio was acquired by EA. Its first game since the acquisition was the free-to-play Apex Legends , released on February 1, , followed by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order , released in November of that year. Respawn developed Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond , which included in its bonus features the Academy Award -winning short documentary Colette. Infinity Ward was a principal studio on the Call of Duty series, and in , released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare , a critical success for the series. West and Zampella leveraged the success of Modern Warfare to renegotiate their contracts with Activision in , asking for large bonuses and creative control of the series in exchange for releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in , which Activision agreed to on the condition that the control would revert to Activision if the pair were fired. From that point, Activision sought ways to trigger that clause, and West and Zampella looked for ways to make Infinity Ward independent. Events came to a head in March when the two were fired from Activision, forfeiting their bonuses. Several lawsuits followed, with West and Zampella accusing Activision of unpaid bonuses while Activision countersued that the two had conspired with Electronic Arts EA to damage Infinity Ward, but these suits were ultimately settled out of court. In April , a month after their release from Activision, West and Zampella set off to form a new independent studio, Respawn Entertainment. West and Zampella will retain the rights to all intellectual property produced by them in the future. On October 22 they revealed the release date of the game to be March 11, , in North America, and March 13 in Europe. In March , it was announced that Respawn was developing a sequel, Titanfall 2 , which was later released on October 28,

Call of Duty co-founder and Respawn Entertainment head Vince Zampella is taking the reigns on the Battlefield series amidst a major franchise shakeup. On the heels of Battlefield 's rocky launch , a new report from GameSpot details several major changes at the highest levels of the series' development team and structure. With Zampella now leading the charge, EA DICE aims to build what's being called a "connected Battlefield universe" seemingly consisting of multiple unannounced games or experiences. Not everyone's coming along for the ride. Moreover, Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto is heading up a new development team in Seattle to help bring a bigger focus on storytelling to the new Battlefield universe. Finally, Ripple Effect, the studio behind Battlefield 's Portal mode, is reportedly making a new "Battlefield experience" that'll be connected to the larger universe. This is all pretty vague right now, and it's unclear how many new games are actively in development under which development teams, but it's an undeniably foundational restructuring that likely spells a significant change in direction going forward. Battlefield has drawn criticism for a few reasons, not least of which are its many bugs, glitches, and technical shortcomings. The game's day one patch fixed a number of those issues, but it's still sporting one of Steam's lowest user ratings ever. While EA Dice says it'll continue to support Battlefield , it sounds like much bigger plans are in the works for the series at large.

It was a day that began like any other. Which is to say that it began with every website in the Western world parroting more accusations from the three-ring circus that is Activision's ongoing legal battle with former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella. It wasn't long though before we learned that West and Zampella - fired by Activision last month - have formed a new company called Respawn Entertainment and that they have signed a multi-game deal with EA Partners , under which they will retain ownership of any intellectual property they create. And then it wasn't much longer after that that Eurogamer got on the phone with West and Zampella - who are at such an early stage of their venture that they don't even have an office yet, let alone any employees or game ideas - and got to try and pry some answers from them about the Infinity Ward debacle. So, you know, the situation was kind of forced on us, so once that happened the next day we were flooded with calls and emails from publishers interested in working with us, which came at a great time for us and obviously in a tough situation, so people showing that much interest in us really helped us get through it. We had a lot of offers come our way and deals were presented to us, and we looked at it and we really thought the EA Partners would give us the freedom and independence we needed to make great games.
