When migrating to a new computer, it is possible to move your entire Vortex setup across with a few manual steps. It's first important to understand the data that you will need to back up from the old PC and why it is important. The data Vortex uses to provide your modding experience is stored across three main locations. Before migrating your setup, please be aware that this process is simplest when the following conditions are met:. Ensure you have the latest version of Vortex installed on Both PCs and keep the application closed while you move the files around.

To get the most out of Vortex we recommend you create a free Nexus Mods account , this will allow you to download and manage mods for supported games. You can find Vortex by visiting the download page at the Nexus Mods website. Here you'll be offer two slightly different builds, the one-click installer and the custom installer. Vortex itself takes up very little space on your hard drive, so we generally recommend the one-click installer. To download your preferred version, click the "Manual Download" button below it. After downloading the file, simply run the EXE from your downloads folder. If you do choose the custom installer, you'll be prompted to select an installation location for Vortex. Make sure this is somewhere your user account has write access to. You can start using Vortex without logging in. Vortex will be able to detected your installed games without an account. If you are planning to use mods from Nexus Mods, you can log in by clicking the "Log In or Register" button at the top of the toolbar or by clicking the blank avatar in the top-right of the screen. Sometimes Vortex will be unable to connect to the authorisation service and will present a fallback. If you are seeing error and you're not sure how to fix them, please see the Troubleshooting Guide. It is recommended that you run the games you want to mod at least once before trying to manage them with Vortex.

After seeing that a lot of people are having trouble using Vortex, I thought I would share some tips from my own experience. Building a load order with Vortex is an entirely different system from previous mod managers. If you are completely new to modding, make sure you read some guides on how to set up your game and the basics of modding. This guide is aimed at people switching over from NMM or MO2, who already have a solid grasp on the basics. Vortex is now post version 1. I have included in my advice here some basic troubleshooting and best practices for avoiding bugs. In general, the support forums for Vortex are helpful, and the devs themselves make regular appearances there and occasionally help out, so please go there to resolve bugs with the program. The only mods that cannot be installed with Vortex, are ones that cannot be installed by any mod manager. Very large mods that have always needed at least a partly manual installation like Weaponsmith Extended will still need this.

Ever since I started modding SE, the directory used to be named "skyrimse", but for whatever reason Vortex recently decided to start moving downloads to a folder named "skyrimspecialedition". Clicking on the tile will instruct you how to proceed. Ensure you have the latest version of Vortex installed on Both PCs and keep the application closed while you move the files around. Clicking on these tiles will setup of the game for modding inside Vortex. Similar to above, if you game is not in the same folder, you may have to manually point Vortex to the correct folder. It seems to be random what mod gets selected to be moved, and new downloads NEVER go to the "new" directory, so the only thing that does is to generate trouble for the user and errors of downloads needing to be repaired on the app. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser.
