An Ohio State University alumnus, Dr, wenzel dr. Wenzel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the university in and served as a practicing pharmacist in Columbus.
Wenzel received her PhD from the University of Washington-Seattle where she used structure-function studies to understand specificity within the ubiquitination system. In particular, she focused on a cell division checkpoint known as the abscission checkpoint that synchronizes the completion of mitotic events with ESCRT-mediated membrane severing. In her studies, she identified several proteins that function with ESCRT proteins to reversibly inhibit abscission. Wenzel joined the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the Fall of where she continues to study signaling mechanisms that regulate cell division. Orderly progression through cell division is regulated by a series of checkpoints which ensure the correct completion of DNA synthesis and chromosome segregation before cells can proceed to the next stage of the cell cycle.

The Wenzel Lab is focused on the role of biomechanical force generated by flow of fluids such as blood and lymph in determination of cellular fate, motility behaviors, and modulation of the immune system. We are particularly interested in cellular mechanisms which could be leveraged for treatment of patients with hematological disorders, immune dysfunction, and cancers. Our cancer research aims to identify new ways of preventing the spread of cancer by understanding how lymphatic flow and force in the tumor microenvironment modulate metastatic programs and the immune system. Our stem cell research seeks to support recovery of the immune system after cancer treatment and is centered on how blood flow regulates fate decisions and energy metabolism during hematopoietic stem cell specification. Sally Wenzel completed her M. Following her residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University and her fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, she spent 19 years at National Jewish Health and the University of Colorado before moving to the University of Pittsburgh. She has received numerous national and international awards from the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society for her work in asthma. Wenzel has a passion for understanding and improving the treatment of asthma, in particular severe asthma. She has promoted severe asthma as a complex disease and her studies of asthma phenotypes have led the field in understanding these complexities. Wenzel has developed a strong translational program to study the pathobiology of severe asthma and its phenotypes or subtypes , utilizing human cells from human patients and controls. She is increasingly interested in the role of environmental pollution and the associated health disparities in asthma outcomes. Wenzel is currently Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Anuradha Ray on a large scale NIH funded program grant to understand mechanisms of severe asthma to improve treatment. Juan C.
