Photography is now available on prescription for people struggling with their mental health, as part of a pilot project launched by Wex Photo Video and supported by the National Academy of Social Prescribing NASP. Social prescribing works by a GP or healthcare professional referring a patient to a link worker who gets to know the individual and prescribes activities to enrich their life. Research suggests that taking part in creative activities such as photography can help people suffering from depression, anxiety and even PTSD[2] by boosting self-esteem, reducing stress and combatting loneliness. By giving people with mental health difficulties access to masterclasses, equipment and ongoing support, we want to connect them to a wider community; help develop their self-esteem and give them a channel for self-expression. Whilst photography will never be the total solution, we hope that this project will help some people who are currently struggling. It will include;. Photography masterclasses: Wex Photo Video will host in-person photography masterclasses to educate participants about the art and science of photography, allowing them to build a community at the same time as developing their skills and techniques. The masterclasses will be led by photographer Daniel Regan who uses the power of photography to facilitate difficult conversations and explore complex emotional experiences Photography equipment: Participants in the programme will be able to use provided Canon cameras with their photos printed out in specially created journals to help them embark on their creative journey Online resources: Wex Photo Video will provide online resources to programme participants so they can continue to explore the world of photography beyond the pilot project. Having recently taken up photography, I can say first-hand that there is something truly remarkable about being behind the camera. Many people with mental health issues struggle to express their thoughts and emotions with words, which can make it difficult to convey how they are feeling and what they need. Using the Canon cameras, participants captured images to tell a story about their identity with Daniel Regan encouraging them to look at their world differently. From there, the link worker supports that person in developing a plan, which could include getting practical support for housing or debt, or taking part in activities like gardening, dance, cooking, painting or, thanks to initiatives like this, photography.

Just last year, camera retailer Jessops announced it would be shutting down of its branches. Originally starting as an online-only retailer, Wex Photo Video has gone from strength to strength since it merged with Calumet in Initially, there were just eight stores spread across Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester and the flagship store in Norwich. In the last five years, Wex has continued to invest in bricks and mortar opening stores in Milton Keynes, Leeds, and Newcastle. More than ever, people are indulging their creative side through serious photography.

The two companies, which are both owned by Aurelius Equity Opportunities, had been set to merge since March, a process that has now been completed. Wex Photographic states that the move will create "a single, market-leading business that will cater to the needs of a wide range of enthusiast and professional photographers. Furthermore, it is understood that Calumet's retail stores in the UK will take on Wex Photographic's branding in the coming months, and will benefit from extensive investment to improve shop fittings, customer comfort and stock. Studio products and accessories sold under the Calumet brand, however, will continue to be badged in the same way. It already owned Calumet Photographic's UK operations, as well as lighting company Bowens, which folded earlier this year. Calumet's European operations, which include stores in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, will continue to trade under the Calumet banner. Calumet had also previously traded as Calumet Photo in the United States, although it declared bankruptcy in Petapixel has also reported that the new operation is likely to trade under the name Wex Photo Video, although this was not confirmed in this week's announcement. Although Calumet has operated eight retail stores in the UK to Wex Photographic's single Norwich-based showroom, a press release for this week's announcement states that market research showed the latter company to be the better-known brand. Wex Photographic also owns UK-based repair centre Fixation, which will continue to trade under its own branding.
