Woman handcuffed to bed and husband dies
A couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house.
One of the best things about this movie is its smallness. Almost the entirety of the film takes place in a single room — the master bedroom of the remote lake cottage that Jessie Carla Gugino and her husband Gerald Bruce Greenwood have rented for an isolated weekend retreat. But instead of abandoning the idea right away, Gerald resists. And then he has a heart attack, leaving Jessie handcuffed to the bed. Though Flanagan has justly earned critical acclaim for his smart pacing and well-crafted storytelling, his movies — all of which he has written or co-written — have consistently felt uneven, especially in terms of their writing. These movies are often set in small towns with dark underbellies and are rife with deep-rooted nostalgia, themes of male bonding particularly between men and boys and boys becoming men, and allegories for the creative process.

After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free. I honestly have no idea where to start with this review of Gerald's Game , because the movie - and, I assume, the original novel - don't really have a story that allows for a consistent narrative. I've read that many people considered the novel to be unfilmable and this proves them right in a way, but is still enjoyable to watch.
Gerald's Game is a suspense novel by American writer Stephen King. The book is dedicated to King's wife Tabitha and her five sisters. Originally, the book was intended to be a companion piece to King's novel Dolores Claiborne , with the connecting theme of two women in crisis caught in the path of an eclipse , though this aspect was greatly reduced by the time the books were published. The book was adapted into a film directed by Mike Flanagan. Jessie Burlingame and her husband Gerald, a successful lawyer, travel from Portland to their secluded lake house in western Maine near Kashwakamak Lake for a spontaneous romantic getaway. The titular "game" involves handcuffing Jessie to the bedposts during sex, a new practice that Jessie only pretends to enjoy, though Gerald finds it exciting. This time, however, Jessie finds herself reluctant after being handcuffed and asks to stop, only to be ignored by Gerald, who pretends her protests are only part of their game.

Even his non-horror classics like Stand b y Me and The Shawshank Redemption exhibit many of these traits, and his most well-known works, like The Shining and It , comprise pretty much all of them. Originally intended to be part of the same work, both stories stand apart from the King canon for their depiction of women experiencing domestic abuse and sexual assault.
