The World Cube Association WCA was started in by Ron van Bruchem and Tyson Mao to expand the popularity of speedcubing across the world and set a standard for how competitions should be run and delegated. There were evident issues with this competition regarding delegation and rule following, because nothing like this had ever been attempted before, excluding the original, televised World Championship of , organised off the back of the immense success that the famous puzzle had seen in the years before. The World Cube Association started off slowly, hosting another competition in following the August World Championship. Over the years, the number of competitions grew almost exponentially; 12 competitions in 6 different countries in to nearly competitions in over 70 countries in Goal - To have more competition in more countries with more people and more fun, under fair and equal conditions.

The World Cube Association WCA is the worldwide non-profit organization that regulates and holds competitions for mechanical puzzles that are operated by twisting groups of pieces, commonly known as twisty puzzles a subcategory of combination puzzles. The most famous of those puzzles is the Rubik's Cube. Since the start of the WCA there have been over 10, competitions. The organization is run by the board members. It assigns different teams and committees as well as delegates who can organize official competitions. The presence of a delegate is required to make the competition official. After competitions, they read reports from the WCA delegates about competitions to be up to date on the WCA activity worldwide and take part in the discussion of any incidents that occur. This includes answering general requests that are submitted via the WCA website and maintaining the WCA's social media accounts.

The cubing community back then was relatively unknown as this was a time when email services and the internet were still in their early stages. The earliest archived cubing exchanges can be traced to July when the MIT Cube Lovers mailing list was set up, on which early solving methods and puzzle theory were main topics of interest.
