After a fantastic year with the Canon 5D mark I, I was delighted with image quality but could feel its limitations as I completed the first year of my photojournalism MA, 5d mark ii review. I have had this camera for a very long time, in fact, for the duration of my career as a professional photographer. I have shot about 20 TB of stills on these cameras over the years I have owned them I do a lot of time-lapse work. It is only recently that I have expanded my lens collection to add macro lenses, tilt-shift lenses, and a 50mm Sigma Art lens. I am brutal with my kit and will happily sacrifice a camera for a photograph. However, the one in the image above is the first one that I purchased all those years ago. The shutter count on this is a little scary, but I still use it most days, and it works flawlessly. For the work I did, these cameras were true workhorses.
The 5D was affordable, was relatively small and light, and three years since it was introduced, still delivers image quality that rivals or surpasses many current Jan DSLR models. It was a huge success in the industry. As each announcement passed, I was even more sure the next one would include a 5D replacement - I bought a 5D a year prior to the 5D II's announcement to be ready to make direct comparisons. And Canon has not let our anticipation down. The 1Ds III has a 16 pixel horizontal resolution advantage, but does not show about 35 left and right edge pixels on the LCD when reviewing the image.

In fact, I think I installed it once, but it messed up my camera in other functions so I returned the camera to its original state. If you shoot 3k shots per one event like a wedding coverage and need to forward proof shots within a week, I can just batch process jpgs and complete the proof task. Danged mini-USB ports breaking! The thing that solidified my distaste for Canon's business model was an ad that I saw in a magazine: in quite a few issues they ran an ad for the 5D2 which had a fisheye shot of a gorgeous Hawaiian sunset, with amazing dynamic range, and whatever tag line Canon thought was smart about the 5-series' newfound resolution boost. Simple additions such as the ability to now see not only the ISO setting but also the remaining battery life through the viewfinder are very welcome indeed! The only problem is that you have to wait 3 to 6 years for them. My only gripe was getting lens calibration I did blow through two shutters, but I did get a lot out of them. You'll need to get accustomed to manual focus — or learn meditative breathing as you desperately try to lock focus on your moving subject.
