I never played but I was a little hesitant. I doubt anything great will come of it, but it has the right foundation for a fun, uncomplicated progression-fantasy story.

For a boy coming of age and discovering a magical self-reliance and new powers for every occasion, the future is in the cards, in this fantasy adventure. Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village 49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions. Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities.

I was not expecting this to be this good. Put simply it's just a book that feels like it was thrown together without much thought. If you paint a society with that much raw injustice and suffering for entire communities, including needless death and suffering of children, I'm going to have a hard time wanting any story other than "fix this mess". That I didn't entirely like Arthur but felt compelled to find out what happened next speaks to the strength of the story. He's so far behind the eight-ball he's practically off the table. The card system is solid and satisfying in equal measures, just underused in this first run out. The card mimic is both silly and endearing at the same time. The MC is a boy of 12 working in the outlands. I think the author followed that sentiment commendably. Yet what disappointed in the story was the amount of time it takes Arthur to actually start building his deck. Rating 4. The narrator is amazing and does so well with voices, inflection, and cadence.

The pacing was fine Neither slow nor breakneck and the writing was nice and simple. I couldn't be too judgemental because I also did some rascal shit when I was his age. Arthur is a slight wisp of a year old protagonist who is shown to be below average in ability for a great many things. The prose is surprisingly decent for a self-published royal-road LitRPG. But I'm so not interested in the rest of the trappings. The most Arthur could hope for was to someday earn a trash-tier spell card. So I would give this 4. This is a book with no heroes, everyone is just a different type of villain. The class and ability scores feel empty and tacked on. Great MC who's not a total moron or an edgelord, like many in the genre, or even your typical Lawful Good Gary Stu, and decent side characters, which I hope will get developed further in future books. So I'm out and one star.
