We eventually got a small pile of funding from Google, but enough for me to quit my job and start doing this full-time. So now I split my time equally between doing writing, research, editing, and so on, and organizing and running training workshops for Russian-speaking journalists in the Post Soviet space. In particular, two investigations they did — One, for the Las Vegas shootings, and the other for the brawl by the Turkish Embassy in Washington — were absolutely fascinating. Open-source investigations using publicly available materials have been increasingly valuable in discovering the truth in highly politicized global issues. In the past few years, Bellingcat, one of these open-source investigative sources, has uncovered information about the shooting down of MH over Ukraine and the poisoning of Sergey Skripal earlier this year. A new type of investigative journalism by bloggers is blurring the lines between armchair Internet sleuthing and hard-hitting investigative reporting to uncover information about Russia's role in the Ukraine conflict.
