Clary Fray , is a Shadowhunter who was raised among normal people a. When her mother was kidnapped, Clary's simple life was turned upside down as she was forced into a journey of self-discovery in a dark world of demons and other creatures. Clary is the second child of Jocelyn Fairchild and Valentine Morgenstern She was born after her brother, Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern whom most everyone believed perished in a fire with her father. Her mother and father, both Shadowhunters, belonged to an extremist organization of Shadowhunters called the Circle. Before she was born, her mother went fled to New York, leaving her life as a Shadowhunter behind. While playing at a park when she was young, Clary was almost attacked by a demon but was saved by her mother. After the incident, Jocelyn rushed her to Magnus Bane, a warlock, and begged him wipe the memories of the Shadow World from her mind.

For years, Clary lived a mundane life with Jocelyn, until the return of her father and her brother, Jonathan , exposed her to a new world, throwing their lives out of balance as Clary found herself on a journey with her fellow Shadowhunters to stop them. Clarissa Adele Morgenstern was born to Valentine and Jocelyn Morgenstern on August 23, , over a year after her older brother, Jonathan. Jocelyn gave her the middle name "Adele" to honor her own mother. Jocelyn had turned against Valentine's ideals months before her conception. During the time after Jonathan's birth, Jocelyn suffered depression because of her strange feelings of rejection towards him. Hoping to help Jocelyn, Valentine secretly gave her doses of the angel Ithuriel's blood, hoping to "cure" her depression, unaware that she was pregnant with Clary, therefore making her an "accidental" experiment.

Valentine secretly gave his wife the blood of the angel Ithuriel, thus making Clarissa's birth an accidental experiment as Valentine wanted to "cure" Jocelyn's depression. Jocelyn and her friend Lucian Graymark planned to thwart the Uprising by Valentine but learned of her pregnancy. Though wanting to escape from her husband, she feared that Valentine would hunt her down to guarantee their safety. During the Uprising, Jocelyn stole Valentine's cup and left with her daughter, as her son's death was faked. Jocelyn left the Shadowhunting life and culture and believed that Valentine was still alive and hiding. Clary was raised as a mundane, without knowing of her lineage nor culture so that she could be safe. Despite Jocelyn hoping that she wouldn't have the Inner Eye, she caught Clary playing with a faerie when she was young. She was taken to see Magnus Bane to get rid of her Inner Eye, but he warned of the risk of doing so.

Magnus stayed the night to heal Luke and Maia, and Jace did not have any other choice as he had to be where Magnus was. Sebastian got mad at her all of a sudden, before calming down and telling her that he was sorry.
