Stephanie Rew was born in and is a Scottish painter based in Edinburgh. Her highly detailed figurative paintings are in collections across the UK and Europe, and she is gaining considerable international interest in her work. She lives and works in Edinburgh, and has been painting in her studio at Coburg House Art Studios since Tone and form, as well as strong light and colour is important to me, as I concentrate on the juxtaposition of tonality and texture whilst keeping a private, reflective mood with the work. Theatrical costume has always been a favoured theme, and I have been using couture garments along with the kimono to add drama and design to my art. My inspirations come from my lifelong love of the Ukiyo-e Japanese wood-cut prints, as well as the works of Caravaggio, Whistler and Sargent. I am influenced by the Baroque style of oil painting and utilise a combination of Old Masters techniques with my own.

Last week marked the beginning of a Ruscha-inspired journey into sound. Who knows where the project will lead us? Duncan works on all kinds of sound projects from rhubarb to semaphore, field recordings to invented instruments… what a curious, questioning and inspirational artist we found him to be. Wolverhampton showed the Warhol Artist Room in so we had lots of ideas and experiences to share with the young people at Southampton. We made Warhol-esque badges and used digital photography to create portraits which we then manipulated in a Warhol style using collage materials.

It was a perfect day for a birthday bash in honor of one of our very favorite people, Dave Duncan. The Basic Bowl was overflowing with PBR, punk rock, skate legends, young guns and good friends, just the way you would expect it to be. Double D is one of those incredible people that holds skateboarding together at its seams and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. The energy level always jumps up a notch when Duncan appears, and he always makes you feel at home when you see his face. Thanks for all that you do for all of us, DD. Happy 53rd Birthday, Duncan!!!
