One of the few faults we found in the More Trail v3 is with its upper. Given the shoe's high stack, we expected a more supportive fit. What we got instead was a light, stretchy, and airy mesh with some overlays that—while comfortable—did not sufficiently provide the support we needed. Assessing the shoe's breathability, we rated it as 3 out of 5. That's considered average amount of ventilation for a trail shoe. When the light illuminates the upper, it reveals numerous ventilation holes and a thin mesh that effectively facilitates ample airflow. However, there's nothing quite like the trusty old microscope to reveal the intricacies of those ventilation holes.

Many of their models don textured overlay, with swollen midsoles made from distorted shapes of foam. Being so elevated off the ground is an indirect form of protection. However, at least early on in testing, the More Trail v3 has managed to mostly skirt these issues, performing as a deceptively balanced, wieldy, and comfortable ultra-distance option for folks looking to steamroll over trails. Whether or not these early impressions bear out over time will be the subject of my forthcoming full review. Without spending too much time recounting its history, I can point to a few popular movements that infected footwear in recent memory, for better or for worse. Who could forget the minimalist shoe movement galvanized by the mainstream success of Born to Run? Or the subsequent pendulum swing that inspired the persistent maximalist movement a few years later? Trail running is far from an adolescent sport, but its recent zeitgeisty appeal has granted footwear brands freedom to experiment, take some shots, throw a bunch of things against a wall and see what sticks, to layer on another idiom. Less a matter of life and death, footwear brands are under similar pressure. Shoes with towering stack heights need countermeasures to provide balance on unstable terrain.

On Trail I have some very very long runs planned this summer, so finding myself in a pair of the More Trail v3 felt like fortuitous timing. On the flip side, the heel appears to be sufficiently durable to withstand sock abrasion throughout the shoe's lifespan.

A huge amount of Fresh Foam X sits underfoot, providing a soft and bouncy ride. Extensive side walls and other elements provide a stable neutral ride while a comfortable but secure upper sits up top. A thick Vibram rubber outsole covers the bottom with massive lugs, making for an incredibly durable shoe that easily tackles road, trails, mud and more. The true monster truck of the trail, the Fresh Foam X More Trail v3 is best for those wanting as much cushioning as possible in a shoe that can handle almost any terrain. The fit is normal to slightly wide with a slightly lower volume fit. The forefoot is slightly rounded with just enough room for the toes. This transitions into a normal width midfoot although I did have to tighten down the laces a little. The tongue is moderately thick and securely gusseted. This continues into a normal width heel. There is a moderately stiff heel counter in the rearfoot.

I only mention that because I suspect this shoe will be on the feet of a lot of casual wearers thanks to its exceptional design. Most maximal trail shoes leverage rockered sole geometry to help orient the foot during the gait cycle, among other things, and the More Trail v3 is no different. For such a massively cushioned shoe, one would expect an annoying amount of tippiness—especially out on the trails.
