We're super early into Commander spoiler season. In fact, as I'm writing this on Friday, we only have one day's worth of previews from Gen Con. Thankfully, the first day of previews was designed to not only show off the theme of each deck but the primary commander designed to support the theme. On one level, all of these cards a pretty straightforward: Sevinne, the Chronoclasm is a great leader for a flashback-themed deck, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer clearly wants a deck full of morph creatures, Anje Falkenrath likes madness cards, and Ghired, Conclave Exile needs tokens to perform optimally. However, beneath the obvious mechanics and interactions, each of these new legends has some sweet synergies and tricks lurking beneath the surface. So today, we're going to take some time to talk about the cool tricks and synergies supported by our new Commander legends, along with a couple of the lists I'm most excited to try out featuring these new generals. As I mentioned before, we're at the very beginning of preview season, so today, we're getting a very early look at the potential of these cards. It's very likely that as the rest of Commander rolls out over the next week, we'll stumble across some other cool things to do with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer , Sevinne, the Chronoclasm , Anje Falkenrath , and Ghired, Conclave Exile. And even if we don't for some reason, each deck will have multiple legends, so we'll have more new commanders to talk about soon, at the very least. Before getting to the cards, I should quickly mention my thoughts on the Commander format.
Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer. Anje was only pushed out of the top three by more-recently printed commanders.
We got the full spoiler and complete deck lists for Commander last week, and the lists are overflowing with sweet new cards and spicy legends to use in the command zone. While this year's edition seems to be better received than last year's, some players still seem to have lingering doubts about whether or not the decks contain enough reprint value, mostly based on the lack of high-end cards. Whether expecting high-end reprints in Commander decks is reasonable is a conversation for another day because today, rather than trying to place Commander into the context of past Commander releases, our goal today is simple: to figure out which Commander deck is best. For this, we'll try to be as objective as possible—while the madness deck is my personal favorite since it has some really interesting legends and draws a lot of cards in a weirdly synergistic way, thanks to the madness mechanic and the various payoffs for discarding cards, drawing a lot of cards isn't a very good criterion for ranking the decks. Instead, we'll turn to 10 categories and rank each Commander deck from first to worst. A first-place ranking gives a deck four points, with second in a category being worth three, third two, and last just a single point.
The Commander format is at its essence all about having fun playing with your favorite cards with your favorite people. The beauty of Commander is in the freedom it gives the player to build any deck they want, with any card they want, as long as they follow the color and quantity requirement. So there are plenty of ways of building different kinds of decks and archetypes. However, fun can be pretty subjective, so instead of the classic Top 10 list, I did two of each color requirement from colorless to five-color and ordered them in the same order. This awesome construct from Dominaria is one of the most unique cards out there.

March 5, by Nate Burgess. In this case, the big spreadsheet is the total of number of decks uploaded during to the various deckbuilding sites we partner with. Shall we take a look at what happened with the popular commanders that year?

Managing graveyard size is an interesting aspect of deckbuilding, sideboarding, and gameplay. In the broader Commander meta, I'd expect to get my board wrathed a few times and end up not doing much of anything, but with Commander precons being relatively light on wraths, simply making big tokens and copying them a bunch of times seems like a pretty easy pathway to winning. It's not often that I discuss the bonus commander, but this one certainly made an impact by turning all black mana symbols into Phyrexian mana! Toggle navigation. Mind you, interesting is not just about "good" or "bad. Thankfully, things have improved at least, to some extent with Commander Naya Populate: I believe that Naya Populate is the deck that benefits most from the all-precon metagame we're discussing. Were the Commander decks iconic because of legitimately exciting designs or just because they got in the door first? Thanks to the token theme, there's quite a few cards worth using in a less populate-themed deck. Commander and Commander both contained cohesive, straightforward decks that held little excitement for those interested in other build paths.

If you do want to stick with the madness theme, considering heading toward Vampires, playing Falkenrath Gorger , and trying to loot your graveyard full of tribe members to reanimate with something like Living Death. Overall, these decks really showed the perils of a narrower theme making it that much harder to slot in worthwhile reprints-- but then, is that really the point of these decks? Ghired's greatest contribution to the token theme is showing off the power of large tokens. These cards are strong. At first, I thought this might have something to do with the order that the decks were previewed in theory, decks that are previewed first will have more time for their cards to decrease in price , but considering Sultai Morph was the first decklist released, this doesn't seem to be the case. The first back-up commander was Elsha of the Infinite , a Future Sight for noncreature spells, far more open-ended overall. Rayami, First of the Fallen is a commander-style Cairn Wanderer , able to permanently build up to a massive keyword warrior over time. Meren of Clan Nel Toth holds steady and passes Arcades the Strategist as he gradually starts to fade. All in all, Commander does represent a big improvement in value over last year, which is a relief, although it still lags behind older editions of Commander in terms of reprints and value, so maybe being better than what is widely considered to be the worst-ever Commander offering Commander isn't really much of a victory. The cycle of planeswalkers was great as well. Nate is a game developer, programmer, and writer from San Francisco.
