The death of Raditz , Goku 's brother, happened at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z , and it was one of the rare perhaps unique instances where Goku did not regret the death of a foe, however, it might have been a mistake. Thanks to some momentous revelations in one of Dragon Ball Super 's recent chapters, the decision to kill his brother is not only just a mistake, but one of Goku's biggest ever. Goku belongs to the Saiyans, a powerful warrior race that makes a living conquering and selling planets. Strength is everything for a Saiyan, and their battle potential is assessed at birth. Goku's father, Bardock , was a low-class warrior who showed great potential and died trying to stop the galactic tyrant Frieza from destroying the Saiyan's planet, Vegeta. Bardock had two sons: the eldest, Raditz, was on a mission on another planet when Frieza destroyed Vegeta; Goku was just a baby, but he was sent in a space pod to Earth shortly before his planet exploded. Years later, Raditz who had been informed about Goku's location by their parents arrives on Earth and tries to recruit his little brother into the Frieza Army. In the process, he tells Goku who has lost his memories after arriving on Earth of his Saiyan heritage, opening the way for future developments in the saga. Goku and Piccolo fight against Raditz and, despite him being stronger than both, manage to kill him thanks to Goku sacrificing his own life to let Piccolo hit both with his Special Beam Cannon. Goku never expresses any regrets for killing his brother, nor the wish to bring him back at any point using the Dragon Balls. Goku's behavior is odd because, unlike other Saiyan, Goku is kind, merciful, and often expresses the desire to let his opponents live. Goku's lack of interest towards his brother, however, could have been a great mistake.

Before they can depart, however, he is confronted by his nemesis Piccolo. Demon Invader. After destroying another planet's population, Nappa notes they might get rewarded though a worn-out Raditz is unsure and complains about being beat from all the fighting and needs to get to a medical machine, goku raditz, causing Vegeta to mock him for acting like goku raditz he's a Prince " and notes if it weren't for him holding them back then they would have finished conquering the planet in less than three days.

It follows the Piccolo Jr. Saga and precedes the Vegeta Saga. This saga is the first part of the Saiyan Saga with the rest of said saga being the Vegeta Saga. Its main plot concerns the arrival of a humanoid alien, known as a " Saiyan ", who came to Earth looking for a person named "Kakarot", who is otherwise revealed to be Goku. The saga covers the arrival of this Saiyan, Raditz , and his fight against his brother, Goku, and Piccolo.

Based on the amount of power he wields in the current Dragon Ball continuity of Dragon Ball Super , it seems improbable that Goku could be taken out by a single fighter since the Saiyan has a reputation of pulling through at the last second with an unexpected burst of life-saving energy with which he uses to win. Goku is a Saiyan who was sent to Earth as an infant as his home world of Planet Vegeta faced total annihilation. When he arrived at Earth, Goku suffered a major head injury that altered his personality drastically, changing him from an aggressive and powerful monster to a fun-loving kid who liked to fight for pleasure. According to Raditz, Goku was sent to Earth as a baby with the goal of having him obliterate the population himself so that the Saiyan army could resell the planet to the highest bidder. A few chapters later, Goku and Piccolo are able to defeat Raditz and save Gohan after Goku locks Raditz in place by holding his arms behind his body while Piccolo delivers a devastating blast of destructive energy.

Raditz's appearance consists of extremely long, spiky black hair with a prominent widow's peak, brown and black colored Battle Armor in the same style as the rest of Frieza 's soldiers , with boots, armored wristguards, and a scouter that is blue on the title page of chapter , and green in the anime and full color manga. Additionally, he wears two accessory bands that are white in the manga and red in the anime: one is tightened around his left arm, and the other on his left leg. Raditz also inherits Bardock 's eyes and complexion.

Suddenly his father Bardock appears before him and calls Raditz pathetic for feeling sorry for himself and decides to toughen him up. During the main story's epilogue, Elder Kai mentions Goku surpassing his brother as an example that being older and more experienced does not make one the better fighter when refuting Future Trunks' claim that he is stronger than the two Future Warriors due to being more experienced. Piccolo informs Raditz that Goku will be wished back to life using the Dragon Balls. Raditz however says that he was just caught off guard for a second.

It aired in first-run syndication on September 13, The episode begins with a Farmer working in a field, putting a stack of hay into his truck, when he hears a strange noise.

Vegeta is intrigued by the Dragon Balls, and they decide to head to Earth to use them to wish for immortality rather than wishing Raditz back to life, as Raditz had hoped. Raditz, with his dying breath, retorts by saying that the scouter on his head acts as a transmitter as well, and that the other two more powerful Saiyans will come to Earth in one year and avenge his death. While the specifics behind their sibling relationship are undoubtedly odd, Goku named the Five-Star Shadow Dragon as his brother , adding one more slight to Raditz 's memory. Raditz and Goku engage in battle, Raditz apparently having become more powerful as he is capable of holding his own with the trained Goku, though in the end Goku defeats Raditz and then prepares to head off to confront Vegeta and Nappa. Raditz keeps his long hair in this form. Raditz is still confident as he considers the warrior mere trash and even tries to intimidate his brother, Piccolo, and the warrior by telling them that his two Saiyan comrades are stronger than he is. Under the influence of Dark Magic, Raditz manages to dodge a Special Beam Cannon and attacks him with a ki blast which injures Piccolo. Raditz and his allies were collected to battle as competitors in the Super Space-Time Tournament , making up Team Vegeta notes that if Raditz continues to drag them down due to his weakness he will kill him. He tracks down the source of the energy and comes face to face with Piccolo , Goku's mortal enemy at the time.
