Rosalina is a character who makes her debut in Super Mario Galaxy. She is a very powerful figure, as her duty is to watch over and protect the cosmos, while also serving as the adopted mother of the Lumas and commanding the Comet Observatory. Rosalina's backstory is chronicled in her storybook told by her in the Comet Observatory's Library in Super Mario Galaxy. Nine chapters are unlocked throughout the game, and the last is unlocked by completing the game. Rosalina's story begins when she meets a young Luma in a rusted spaceship, where they rebuild the spaceship to go search for the Luma's mother.

There are a few details about Rosalina from the "Mario" games that some fans might not immediately notice. Nearly all of the games that Nintendo has developed for the franchise have been targeted at gamers of all ages, but some ideas and concepts are less likely to be picked up on by younger players. Rosalina was first introduced in "Super Mario Galaxy," which came out back in This makes her a relatively recent addition compared to the other princesses in the franchise, but a fair amount of information has already been established about her in the handful of titles in which she makes an appearance. In fact, Nintendo has already developed a much deeper backstory for her than most characters in the "Mario" universe. Rosalina actually hails from the Mushroom Kingdom, like Princess Peach, but she left her home world to explore the stars alongside a Luma who crash-landed there, promising to help the poor stranded creature get back to its mother. Over the course of this journey, Rosalina came to meet several other Lumas, built the Comet Observatory, and became a central character in several adventures featuring a certain mustachioed Italian plumber. In that time, Nintendo has developed some aspects of her character that only adults are likely to notice. Princesses Peach and Daisy both have hairstyles that are bouncy and fun, but fairly conservative. One of the first things that many players might notice about Rosalina's design is that she sports a much more alternative fashion sense.

In an interview, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that in developing Super Mario Galaxy , while he had planned the usual kidnapping of Princess Peach , he also "had another cast of characters, a princess from outer space and her family of talking stars [ the Lumas ] , who had a deeper, sadder story that was revealed through elegant picture-book scenes throughout the game. So telling her story as a fairytale by reading the book to all the Lumas as if they were young children at storytime just seemed like the mood-appropriate way to accomplish this. When Rosalina's character was in early development, the Super Mario Galaxy development team contemplated having her character be related to Princess Peach. This relationship did not remain as an element of the final story, but is the reason for the design similarities between Peach and Rosalina.
Baby Rosalina is a minor character in the Super Mario franchise designed to be the infant counterpart of Rosalina. In Mario Kart 8 , Baby Rosalina is an unlockable lightweight racer and shares all of her stats with the other playable baby characters, as well as Lemmy Koopa. Baby Rosalina returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , in which she is available from the start. Her statistics have also been slightly altered. She is still classified as a lightweight character, but now only shares her stats with Lemmy. Her only rival is Toadette. Baby Rosalina returns as a playable character in Mario Kart Tour.
