Races happen around the world, ideally in grim autocracies, and the same guy has won pretty much all of them for quite a long time now, and will probably win all of them this season, too. Formula One has never been more boring, or more popular. Which brings us to Drive to Survive. Listen, I take my hat off to it. With the possible exception of about three year-old footballers, no one in world sport has wanted to be famous quite as much as Christian Horner. A hilariously unbearable short king, Horner is forever organising cursed clay pigeon shooting events and playing to the cameras on the pit wall, or inviting them to capture him and Geri trotting along on their horses in the Cotswolds, or being filmed asking his children leading questions about what they most wish for. But it does showcase the Faustian downside of sports actively treating themselves like a soap opera. As previously happened with football, where managers have become main characters, the F1 money guys have realised that the actual sport only happens for about 90 minutes, while big bits of its aspired-to global audience are asleep. In terms of those brief punctuation marks, F1 has been at a particular disadvantage because it is currently the most boring motorsport series on Earth, with its governing body either unwilling or incapable of coming up with ways of making it less so. Indeed, as machiavellian machinations contort the team around him, Verstappen gave a salutary reminder that he might be the most powerful bargaining chip of all in the power struggle threatening to tear Red Bull apart. Verstappen won from pole, with a dominant drive that felt all too predictable even only two races into the season. Having held his led into the first corner he disappeared into the distance just as he had done at the first round in Bahrain , with ominous ease in a season that has 22 more meetings to run. A worn out Bearman, having dealt with one of the fastest and most physically demanding circuits of the season, after being called up by Ferrari at the last moment on Friday morning, rightly declared himself happy with the result. It was incredible, especially at the end when I had the two guys on softs bearing down on me. It was another consummate — if uninspiring competitively — drive from Verstappen that demonstrated a relentless precision and flawless execution and left him unchallenged out front. A fine performance then, but perhaps only brief succour from the furore overwhelming the world champion and his team.

Five takeaways from the opening weekend including who can possibly challenge the once again dominant Max Verstappen? Christian Horner has endured a torrid month as team principal of Red Bull after the allegations of inappropriate behaviour made against him by a female employee. He must have felt as if the worst was over — only for an email to be leaked on Thursday to F1, teams, press, and the FIA that contained images purporting to show messages between Horner and the employee who made the complaint. Their veracity has not been proved but it was enough to reignite the furore and pile pressure on to Horner. He and Red Bull battened down the hatches refusing to comment on the leak, nor to confirm or deny whether the messages were real. Other teams meanwhile demanded transparency. F1 and the FIA are understood to be deeply concerned about the impact it is having on the sport. When the weekend opened Max Verstappen was testy in the car, unhappy with the balance on his first time out in practice for the new season. He did not deliver a definitively dominant lap throughout practice, indeed not until qualifying. Then having honed the performance he had the car at his fingertips.

Resignations of Steve Nielsen and Deborah Mayer, plus the Wolff investigation, have left a distrust and conflict in the sport. The sport has made great strides in recent years only to become mired in this latest controversy. The furore has raised questions about the power dynamics inside Red Bull and whether the allegations have been appropriately handled. If in a more enlightened world this might have been an opportunity to sharpen the lines of accountability and responsibility within the sport, even reflect on its power structures and gender imbalances, then perhaps it was ultimately inevitable that we would instead retreat into the more comfortable territory of gossip and intrigue, politicking and bickering.
