UFC Adesanya vs. Tybura in November
Adesanya, 34, suffered one of the most shocking UFC results in recent memory when he lost a one-sided unanimous decision at the hands of Strickland at the Sept. Adesanya was an overwhelming betting favorite to defeat Strickland and notch the ninth championship win of his UFC career, however it was Strickland who became the story. The brash American outstruck and outworked Adesanya from pillar to post in an all-standup affair. Strickland even knocked down Adesanya with a wicked first-round flurry and closed the bout taunting Adesanya, roaring at the now-former champ to come forward. It was just like, you try and hit the guy and it just feels like noodle arms. So yeah, I just felt like that — like a bad dream. You need to do something.

The year-old Strickland , who caused a stir in the lead-up to the fight with sexist and misogynistic comments at a news conference promoting the bout, won a five-round decision with all three judges scoring it Am I going to wake up? Adesanya was more assertive in the second and third rounds, finding his range with his kicks and right-hand shots but continued to leave himself open for Strickland to strike at his body and head. Strickland sensed the opportunity to go after the champion and a flurry of punches and kicks in the final minute helped ensure the decision and the middleweight title. I was even kind of doubting myself at times. In that fourth round, I heard you guys yelling. It fuelled me. The fifth-ranked American earned his title shot after wins over Abus Magomedov and Nassourdine Imavov. In the co-main event, Alexander Volkov won his heavyweight bout by submission in the second round against year-old Sydney-born Tai Tuivasa. The year-old Russian dominated the fight despite an injury to his front leg which Tuivasa had targeted earlier in the round, with a lopsided strike count as he landed hit after hit on the Australian before trapping him in a choke hold which forced Tuivasa to tap out. Following an incredible event in Perth earlier this year, the Octagon returns to Australia for a second pay-per-view event, touching down in Sydney for UFC With a host of highlight reel finishes, a couple absolute bangers, and one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, Saturday night in Sydney was something truly special. Official Scorecards. Kevin Jousset got the night started in a positive fashion for City Kickboxing, warming into the fight and finishing Kiefer Crosbie in the opening round. The welterweight newcomer was a little tight to start the contest, but after eating a couple shots and getting comfortable in the Octagon, Jousset started finding a home for his jab and heavy low kicks. With six members of the Auckland super-camp on the card in Sydney, this was a great initial performance for the team and a strong debut from Jousset.
Despite entering the cage as a massive underdog against one of the greatest champions in UFC history, Sean Strickland outworked Israel Adesanya to become UFC middleweight champion with a unanimous decision win. The fight played out in a strange way, with Adesanya, an accomplished kickboxer, being completely thrown off and ineffective because of Strickland's constant pressure on the feet. Despite the fight never hitting the ground, Strickland was able to easily coast to victory by simply outworking Adesanya and keeping the champion's back to the cage. Adesanya entered the fight as a favorite, but Strickland never seemed uncomfortable from the opening bell, forcing the action and using simple strikes to outwork an ineffective Adesanya. Strickland even came close to stopping the fight with a big flurry in Round 1 that badly hurt Adesanya. Adesanya appeared to have gathered himself at the start of Round 2 and had his most effective five minutes of the fight, though much of that success seemed to come because Strickland's own offensive output decreased. There was never a moment across the fight where it felt as though Adesanya was in control. Despite being an accomplished kickboxer, Adesanya appeared lost because of Strickland's simple pressure-based approach to the fight. Rather than utilize his stronger and more technical striking tools, Adesanya circled around the outside of the cage, rarely planting his feet to let loose with any meaningful offense. Adesanya's lack of offense paired with Strickland's constant forward movement meant that after the conclusion of five rounds, all three official scorecards read in Strickland's favor, crowning a new -- and unexpected -- UFC middleweight champion.
