There is, though it requires a bit of digging; it would be a shame if the gorgeous nine-parter The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House gets passed over. The Makanai is quite lovely, and unlike anything else I have seen lately. It tells the story of Kiyo and her best friend, Sumire, two year-old girls who leave their home city of Aomori after seeing maiko , or apprentice geishas, in the street on a school trip. It prompts them to leave school and move to Kyoto to train to be among their ranks. We join them as they adjust to life in the maiko house, where relationships are formed around the idea of a family unit — there are mothers, sisters and brothers — though nobody is actually related. Clearly, when it comes to the traditional arts of the maiko, she has the potential to become one of the best. Kiyo, meanwhile, dances out of step, has two left feet, can only drum on an off-beat and lacks the skills she needs to progress, though she is as cheerful as she is clumsy. It is much more wholesome than that and has the gentle touch of a modern-day fairytale.

Maikou

The show is based on the manga Kiyo in Kyoto by Aiko Koyama. Though Sumire is hailed as a talent, Kiyo is deemed unfit to become a maiko but soon finds her unexpected calling as their live-in cook. Kiyo and Sumire leave their hometown and head to Kyoto, where they will train as apprentice maiko entertainers. Kiyo receives some unfortunate news, but quickly finds her true calling when the maiko sisters get tired of ordering takeout. A former maiko suddenly makes a return; to her delight, Kiyo receives a heavy package from home. Kiyo and Sumire get a day off and explore the city, making a wish at the shrine; an unexpected guest visits the maiko house, much to Sumire's dismay. Love is in the air, but Kiyo only has eyes for food; Sumire receives wonderful news; Ryoko battles with her feelings.
