It was the first Medarot action game to be released in America. Following tradition, it was released in Kabuto rhinoceros beetle and Kuwagata stag beetle versions, where the player starts with Metabee and Rokusho respectively. The game is actually a modified version of Medarot G specifically to be released to the west, as the western audience was much more familiar with Medarot anime. So the game focuses on characters from Medarot 2 instead of Medarot 5. Compared to Medarot G, the game has very little plotting and dialogue. The battles are 2 vs. The player's partner Medarot is AI-controlled.

Medabots is one of only three games in the series to be released outside Japan, the other two being Medabots AX and Medabots Infinity. Ikki Tenryou is a young boy who is obsessed with Medabots, just like every other kid, however he does not have one yet. One day, his mother Chidori asks him to buy some dinner, but instead he gets talked into buying a Medabot instead with the money. However, it turns out it is missing a medal, a vital part to make a Medabot work. However, a strange mysterious man called the Phantom Renegade gives a medal to Ikki's father Jouzou and tells him he should give it to his son. Now Ikki will finally be able to also take part in Robattles and compete with other fellow Medafighters. But whoever loses the battle must submit one of their Medabot's Medaparts to the victor. Gameplay is split into two different sections. One for the World Map, and another for Battles. When travelling around the World Map the player can find random encounters with other Medafighters. When encountering another Medafighter; it is set in a 3-v-3 Battle with a unique battle system, with each Medabot having four different actions Head parts have a finite amount of ammo, the Medabot will cease to function once its head is destroyed. Arm and L. Arm parts have infinite amount of ammo and can be used repeatedly until destroyed. Legs can affect the movement of player's Medabot based on the terrain within a battle and build up the Medaforce meter.

It is a remake of the Japan-only Game Boy game Medarot 2. It comes in two versions. The differences are some version-exclusive Medabots and Medals , but the storyline is the same. The soundtrack throughout the game is composed by Kinuyo Yamashita.

Medabots has always been a bit of an odd case. Unlike Digimon , which was also similar in setup, Medabots never really seemed to catch on outside Japan. It was initially created as a game, then turned into an anime series, which then spawned several more games - the two titles now on the eShop were the first to be released after the anime started, and are in fact partially based on that series. It's basically, the same story as almost every RPG ever made. Medabots are, of course, the most important thing in this game world. Each consist of six different parts - a frame, a head, two arms, legs which count as one and a medal, which essentially brings it to life. Naturally all this stuff can be fully customized to create lots and lots of different combinations. You can also have up to nine Medabots at once, so you don't just have to keep changing one.
